If You Reap What You Sow Than What Kind Of Seed Are You Sowing

Print Friendly, PDF & Email
There is nothing truer than the statement you reap what you sow. I really hope I can do this topic justice because it is so important in our life that we are sowing the right things. I guess I have a little question to keep in the back of your mind throughout this article…

What Type Of Seed Are You Sowing Into Your Life?

You reap what you sow

I guess there is a sort of four-fold aspect of sowing seed.

1. What type of seed are you sowing into your life? 2. What type of seed are you sowing into your family? 3. What type of seed are you sowing into the Church? 4. What type of seed are you sowing into the vineyard? (Your community) The community is our vineyard and if we want to bring people to the Lord we have to be sowing seed. So there is a lot to sowing seed that goes beyond the personal application. However, if you are not sowing the right seed into your own life then you are going to fall short in the other three aspects anyway.

We Have Got To Be Sowing The Right Seed Into Our Own Lives.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galations 6:7 )
Sowing and reaping… It’s just plain commonsense really… you reap what you sow. Don’t be deceived… Do not be deceived we will reap what we sowIt is so easy to be conned and deceived. When it comes to sowing and reaping sometimes there is a space or a gap between the sowing part and the reaping part. The farmer goes out and he sows his seed and the rain comes and the sun shines. The season comes around and the plants start to grow and eventually he has his harvest.

There Is A Gap… There Is A Season Between The Sowing And The Reaping.

So sometimes you can be deceived and sow the wrong things into your life and they won’t manifest or show themselves to sometime down the track. There are many things we can be trapped by in this life in what we are doing and thinking. You might get away with it for a while… Let’s pick on smoking cigarettes as an example. Why do so many smoke cigarettes when you get cancer from it? It is because there is a gap between the sowing and the reaping. I went to a football reunion at the weekend and I did not fit in at all. It reminded me of when I was a young bloke and back then I used to think I’d be young forever. Remember when time seemed to be a bit longer. Anyhow, I was 21 years old running around the oval getting fit. Back then I used to be a smoker and on the way to the training, I would walk about 5 blocks and would chain smoke about 4 cigarettes before I got there because it would be about 2 hours before you would get to have another one. So I’m smoking and when we get there we start running the laps and there was this really old bloke I used to play with. On these laps, he would be coughing and spluttering and he’d say let this be a lesson to you young blokes don’t take up smoking. Non smokerI remember thinking the blokes nearly 30 years old how healthy does he expect to be? It was no deterrent for me whatsoever. Remember when 30 was old? Because there was such a huge gap between smoking and the results of smoking I was deceived into continuing the habit… Until I came to the Lord.   You reap what you sow. Our message has been simple for years. You come to the Lord, get baptized by full immersion, receive God’s Holy Spirit, and speak in tongues and start a new life. And it’s a simple life. Read the word and pray. How uncomplicated is that? Yet… all of us have had periods in our life where we simply just have not done it. You reap what you sow. If you stop doing the simple things –SMACK!!! Sometime down the track, you run into a brick wall. You get away with it for a while because there is this season between the sowing and the reaping.

God Is Not Mocked!

You get away with it for a while but sometime down the track the wheels just fall off. And to get back onto the bike is that simple philosophy — pray and read the word. It doesn’t come much easier. It is so simple. You reap what you sow. Don’t be deceived. If you are sowing fleshly things (what you are thinking about the most is what you are sowing into your life), and if you are sowing bad things then that is the type of fruit you will grow. That’s the type of harvest you will reap. God is not mocked! You can’t get away with it… We must be sowing to ourselves spiritual things. It is so simple… the type of seed we sow determines the type of harvest we reap. As simple as that… If I was a farmer (I have no idea about farming by the way) and I decided I might grow some corn and I go and plant pumpkin seeds, then it doesn’t matter how much I pray about it, it doesn’t matter how much I think about it, it doesn’t matter how much I wished I had the best corn crop in the world… I’m going to get pumpkins! Because that’s the seed I planted. You reap what you sow. Don’t be deceived… We all want things. Oh, why don’t I have more faith? Why don’t I have this? Why don’t I have that?

What Are You Sowing?

If you’re sowing pumpkins you get pumpkins. If you sow to the flesh you will reap corruption. Decay… rot. If you sow to the flesh you get rot.

Utter rubbish in your life…

Don't sow rubbish into your life

If you sow to the spirit you reap eternal life…

Eternal life

Now that’s a pretty good harvest!

Read Your Bible

With the question: What type of seed are you sowing into your life? Do we even think about it? Sometimes we can just go through life, we can pray and we can do this and do that. But really if you want to have a successful farm, a successful crop, if you want to down the track have a successful harvest you’ve got to put some thought, some plan, and some effort into it. The thing you want the most in your life at the moment needs to be sewn into your life. If you’re seeking healing then get out the word of God and find every scripture there is on healing, then every scripture that is based on healing such as ‘made whole’ and other variations of the word. Sow it into your life. If it’s more faith you want… then do the same thing. It’s no good just deciding one-day you wouldn’t mind having more faith and look out the window and wish it to happen then go back into your living room and watch television. It’s not going to happen! If we want it we must sow it into our life. Forgiveness, love, so on and so forth. Sow them into your life. Don’t be weary in well-doing. You’ll reap if you faint not. Keep working away (maybe that should read keep faithing away). We need to be sowing the seed.
And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. (Matthew 13:3-9 )
Have you got your ears on today? Let’s look at Jesus’ explanation of this parable…
Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. (Matthew 13:18-23 )
There’s a difference between reading the word and hearing it. Take it in… But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. The seed is the word of God. You reap what you sow and we are to sow seed. The seed in our life is the word of God. In our lives we should be sowing the word of God, in our families, we should be sowing, in the Church, we should be sowing and in the community, we should be sowing the word of God. And the big point I want to make from the above scriptures is that our sowing is not like normal farming in our walk in the Lord. You don’t just plant the seed once and then walk away waiting for harvest time. We need to be continually sowing the word of God into our lives because there are forces at work that try to take away the seed. The wicked one comes and takes away the seed that was sown. That could be when we are witnessing. We know in the community when we preach the gospel and before too long something happens and people turn away. Then others come along and they hear the word and rejoice but fall away when putting under a bit of pressure from their peers. Others come along for years and allow the word to get choked by the cares of this world. But in our own lives when we are sowing the seed of God, the word of God in our lives there are forces at work that try and take away even that. Negativity… other opinions… The things that we do… busy lives. What we sow today we need to re-sow tomorrow. We need to continually reaffirm. I can’t labor the point enough — Go through the scriptures they are your bread and butter. If you want something more in your life scripturally (and it will work the other way as well if you want something else in your life to sow it in) but I can tell you nothing will make you happier then the things of God. If you want more faith, you want to heal, you want more love, or you want to know how to forgive or whatever it might be — sow it into your life. Get the scriptures out and read them and re-read them and re-read them.

God Will Give You The Increase!

Meditate upon them. Pray in the Spirit. That waters the seed. It’s a very simple formula. Sow the seed into your life, read the word of God, sow the scriptures into your life, pray daily (that’s the rain, the water that goes onto the seed) and then God will give you the increase.

You Will Get Your Harvest.

The harvest will come if you faint not

Think about any seed you harvest. Any seed you plant into the ground and it comes up looking totally different. Doesn’t it? You don’t have to understand how it all works. How does a seed turn into a plant? You don’t understand. So it is in our life, plant the seed and you will see that something different will come into your life. If you are planting the wrong seed and you are sowing the wrong seed – you don’t want to bear that fruit into your life. We have got to be sowing the right seed. The seed is the word of God. It is Jesus Christ. The promise to Abraham that through his seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. It didn’t say of many seeds just one seed, which is Jesus Christ. The scriptures tell us that Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh. The seed is the word of God. It says we have the seed inside us after we have received the Holy Spirit. It is so important to get the seed into your life to start with. To be born again.
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. (1 Peter 1:23 )
Born again of incorruptible seed.
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. (1 John 3:9 )
When we get born again we get the seed, Jesus Christ. But on top of that, we need to be individually sowing to the Spirit. Sowing – it’s not hard work. It’s enjoyable getting out scriptures and reading them. It is fascinating dwelling upon them and praying to the Lord about them and meditating upon them. Everyone has his or her own way of doing it. There is no set formula. I can tell you what works for me but that’s not a set formula. There’s no super-spiritual way you should be praying or doing stuff. Just do it! What works for me is that I have been sowing forgiveness into my life. Not that anyone needs forgiving I just want to apply forgiveness into my life and apply it to everything. So I’ve got out all the scriptures on forgiveness and then I’ve got all the variations and cleansed and cleaned, redeemed and on and on. All the scriptures I can find and I go over and over and over them. Daily! And I’ve gone to the concordance and drawn out all of the different meanings and I just sow them into my life. I read them and read them and read them. Then I meditate upon them. I go and I sit in a paddock… no, I don’t. I go for a walk and I meditate upon them.

Actually How Good is Meditation?

Isaac sat in a field and he meditated and he opened his eyes and there was this hot chick coming over the hill that was going to be his wife. How good is meditation? You know the story. His father sent his servant to go find Isaac a wife and while Isaac was meditating in the field along she came. The New Testament tells us when Jesus was talking about faith… who doesn’t have a servant that they don’t tell to go do this and that and the other?

Faith is Our Servant!

Faith is your servant

We meditate upon the word and we send faith out to do the work and it brings us good things. Meditate – it does bring to mind sitting in a grass field meditating. Meditation the way the world thinks of it is sitting there chanting some chant but meditating is dwelling upon, constantly thinking about the word of God. I do it while I’m out walking. I read the scriptures and find the scriptures I want and then while I’m walking I’m thinking about them and the Lord reveals more scriptures to you as you go. You can meditate while you are vacuuming, washing up, or whatever. You can meditate on the word of God. Spend the time in your life on the mundane things you do meditate upon the word. Then go and have a time of prayer. I got back in the habit of having a little time of prayer before I go to work each morning and it’s great. Blokes don’t use makeup but a time of prayer certainly puts a shine on my face. Better than any of that other stuff you put on. Ladies forget the Polly filler get into the prayer. No Spackle will make you look as good as a time of prayer can before you go out. It puts a shine on your face. It puts the rain on the word, it puts the rain on the seed, it will grow in your life and you will reap good things If you faint not… If you keep at it… Sow the seed.
But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountiful. (2 Corinthians 9:6)
Now, this is actually talking about giving money or being generous and charitable. However, it can apply to what we are talking about today. He that sows sparingly will reap sparingly. He that sows bountifully will reap also bountifully. We need to sow bountifully as I said before we need to continually sow the word into our lives. Continue reading and going over the scriptures. No matter what things we are going through our lives get the word of God out and let it solve your problems. Someone has been through what you are going through. God has an answer for you. Go through the scriptures and sow the word of God into your lives. He will give you the answer more then any man can.
I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man. (Proverbs 24:30-34 )
The armed man simply means beggar. We have looked at the importance of not being deceived. Of reaping what you sow.

But You Know What? It’s Just As Dangerous To Do Nothing!

Sit back and do nothing. Sit back and don’t sow anything into your life and you know what happens – you bring forth thorns and thistles. You get overrun… Have you ever grabbed a thorn or thistle? It hurts… you don’t want thorns and thistles in your life. If we don’t sow spiritual things in our life and if we sit back and do nothing we still get hurt. We need to be sowing spiritual things into our lives. Solomon walked past and he saw this field and gained understanding from it. The guy who owned it was void of understanding. We are like God’s vineyard, he has created a great garden out of us and he has filled us with the Holy Spirit. Have we let it overrun? Have we let it become full of thorns and thistles? Or are we tending to the garden? Are we tending to the vineyard? The town, the Church and our families – the same deal. Our hometown is full of thorns and thistles. It has been overrun and it needs the word of God sown into it. The walls were broken down. As I said, I went to the football reunion yesterday and I was looking forward to meeting up with some of the guys but I didn’t fit in at all. The conversation… really they don’t have a conversation outside some vulgar comments. But if we don’t walk spiritually we do fit in. The wall is broken down… these things start to become acceptable and start to overrun into our lives. It doesn’t mean you have to turn up and be a Holy Joe but if you let the wall come down then what’s the difference be you and they? You are supposed to be an example by sowing spiritual things into your life. You are supposed to have that wall built up. You don’t want thorns and thistles.

You Reap What You Sow.

Plant good things in your life

And it’s just commonsense. Even in your own garden in your own backyard if you neglect it what happens? It gets overrun and it becomes hard to get it back again. The whole theme here of sowing and reaping is to be consistent. It’s no good going home this afternoon getting all pumped up and rearing to go and pray for 8 hours straight and then do nothing for the next 3 months. It will do you no good. Daily we have got to go out, daily we have got to sow, daily we have got to be praying… daily! And when you get to the stage when you are doing it not as a chore you will get so blessed. It is not a chore it is a blessing. What a privilege that God has filled us with the Holy Spirit.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.  (1 Corinthians 14:2)
What a privilege. That ain’t no chore it’s a blessing. He has given us the word of God. Blessed are your eyes and your ears for they are opened and they understand. You have ears to hear… what a blessing.

What A Shame To Leave The Word Of God On The Shelf.

I was thinking the other day before the printing press and before all these things happened people bled and they died and they suffered huge persecution to get the Bible into print. Now there are millions of copies of it sitting around gathering dust. People were willing to die, but now that we’ve got it, o ho-hum. And it can be like that with the Holy Spirit, you want it so badly, you seek for it and then you get it and after a while o ho-hum. Don’t be like that. Sow… sow to the spirit.
Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. (Hosea 10:12 )
Break up your fallow ground. Before you sow there is a bit of plowing that has to happen. You have to break up the ground you have to plant seed into soft ground. There’s work involved… we need to break up our fallow ground. We have to be soft enough for the word to penetrate. We have to be willing and ready for the word of God to enter into our life. Reap in mercy… Sow in righteousness… it’s time to seek the Lord. He will rain upon us… he will give the increase… our lives will be blessed if we are sowing the right things into it.

You Reap What You Sow Quotes

Here are a couple of quotes I read: “We will reap if we sow. Sow a thought and you reap an act. Sow an act and you reap a habit. Sow a habit and you reap a character. Sow a character and you reap a destiny. It is written in the word of God that we shall reap what we sow.” “You think evil then one day you start doing evil. You start doing stuff it becomes a habit. Habits make you who you are, your character. In who you are decides your destiny.” We want to be of Christian character. We want to be sowing Christian things into our life. We want to have a Christian destiny, which is eternal life. You would have to have rocks in your head if you want the opposite. Eternal life is on offer yet we go through this current life and we continue to blunder and stumble and sow stupid things into our lives. We need to be sowing to the Spirit… Scriptural Quotes:
Job 4:8 Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.
What goes around comes around. You reap what you sow.
Proverbs 11:18 The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward. Proverbs 22:8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

Sowing The Wrong Things Into Our Lives Just Brings Destruction.

Wrong sowing leads to destruction

Be careful what we sow. Again I ask the question: What type of seed are you sowing into your life? Personal – If you are not built up and if you are not sowing the right seed into your own life then you are not reaping good things into your own life. And if this is the case you’re useless on the other three fronts. Family – If you are sowing the right seed into your own life then we are sowing good things into our family as well aren’t we? If we are sowing the right seed into our family then our family has a blessed life. Because good things are sowed in good things are reaped. This goes for anything in your life. Anything – if you want a happy family, if you want a happy marriage… sow marriage seeds! Go and look them up in the scriptures they’re there. Sow happy seeds if you want to be happy. If you want to have friends show yourself to be friendly it says in the scriptures. That is sowing! You might be shy but you can still smile when someone says hello to you can’t you? You can still sow – you reap what you sow. If you are miserable and you are cranky and all that stuff then guess what? Guess what you are going to reap – about ten other people around you exactly the same. You will… all trying to out complain each other. Happiness and joy are what we want… sow good things into your life. And if we are miserable and we unhappy then get into the scriptures and do what I said today and sow the good stuff in.

How Does Alexander the Coppersmith’s Actions Reflect the Concept of Reaping What You Sow?

In the Bible, Alexander the Coppersmith is mentioned as someone who did “much evil” to Paul. His actions reflect the concept of reaping what you sow, as he faced consequences for his harmful behavior. This serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences, and we must be mindful of the seeds we plant.

God Will Help You… God Will Give You The Increase.

What do we sow when it comes to the Church? Things just don’t happen by themselves. We need to be sowing, we need to be putting in, and we need to be helping. Where your treasure is there is your heart also. We need to be sowing into the Church. We want revival. We can sit in the living room wishing it will happen all we like you know but it’s not going to happen unless we are out there sowing the word of God and spreading the seed. Just don’t go through life willy nilly… have a purpose. You might be happy just getting into a time of prayer or whatever but have a purpose. Whether it be praying for other people or whatever. Pray these things into your life. You know if you are coming short somewhere or lacking somewhere. Whatever it is look up the scriptures and pray the solutions into your life. Have a purpose. Read the word, sow the word and it just doesn’t happen in one day. It might take months to get the victory over something; it might take months to have something sown into your life and for you to get the harvest. But continue to sow… bit-by-bit every day. Meditate upon it, go for a walk, or do the vacuuming, wash the dishes, whatever it might be you can meditate while you are doing those things. Sometimes I get down on myself but really I haven’t got it all that bad. I meditate while I walk, I sing choruses while I wash the dishes… it’s all good, isn’t it? You could wash the dishes and whine and moan while doing it couldn’t you? Or you can sing and make a joyful noise to the Lord. You can go for a walk begrudgingly because you have to get fit or you can meditate on the Lord. Meditate upon it and it becomes a part of your life. The whole message of reaping and sowing and in particular the sowing side of things is that it becomes almost like second nature. It’s second nature for you to be nice even if someone is rude to you. That can’t happen without sowing it into your life. The whole thing about having a plan and purpose for sowing spiritual things into our lives is so that every reaction and response we have can be a spiritual one. Pray upon it. Put the rain upon the word and always remember if we remain faithful and true and we do not weary in well-doing and we faint not then God will give us the increase.
