If we are led by the Spirit we are the children of God and are not under the law. To be led by the Holy Spirit means to follow him, he will lead, take charge, give commands, direct our paths, bring us to places, forbid us from others, steer us in the right direction, and teach us all things.
In leading he will witness to us and others, enable us to prophesy, reveal things to come, warn us, and open our eyes to spiritual things.
Let’s see some of the wonderful things that happen when we are led by the Spirit…
If You Are Led By The Spirit!
The Greek word for “led” is (agō) and it can mean… to lead, accompany, take with, guide, direct, bring, drive.
You Are Children Of God
- For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Roms 8:14)
So you are the children of God if…
- You are led by the Spirit of God
- You are accompanied by and therefore walk in the Spirit
- You are guided by the Spirit
- You take your directions from the Spirit
- You go with the Spirit
- You are driven by the Spirit
Further Study that ties in with the above… (Walk, children, joined, unity, direct)
- The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Roms 8:16)
- This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (Gal 5:16)
- …but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. (1 Cor 1:10)
- Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Eph 4:3)
- In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Prov 3:6)
You Are Not Under The Law
- But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. (Gal 5:18)
- There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Roms 8:1)
- That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Roms 8:4)
- For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. (Rom 8:5)
- For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (Roms 8:13)
The Greek word for under is (hypo) and can mean… under, placed beneath, below, accused to be lower than, by, of, with, in.
So if we are led by the Spirit…
- We are not under the law
- We are not placed beneath the law
- We are not below the law
- We are not accused by the law to be of low standing
- We are not walking with the law
- We are not of the law
- We are not in the law
- That makes us above the law
These things should be obvious really because if we are not under the law we are now above the law. We now walk with the Spirit and not the law, we are led by the Spirit and not the law, we are of the Spirit and not of the law, and so on. Further Study that ties in with the above… (Above, grace, liberty, accused, life)
- He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. (John 3:31)
- If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. (Col 3:1)
- Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. (Roms 5:20)
- That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. (Roms 5:21)
- Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (2 Cor 3:17)
- …for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. (Rev 12:10)
- But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. (Roms 6:22)
Examples Of The Holy Spirit Leading, Guiding, Steering, Sending, Speaking, & Forbidding!
He Came By The Spirit…
- And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law. (Luk 2:27)
The Spirit Said (Speaks, Commands)…
- Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. (Acts 8:29)
- While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. (Acts 10:19)
- And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover, these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house: (Acts 11:12)
Caught Away By The Spirit…
- And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea. (Acts 8:39-40)
This is an amazing event. Caught away in the Greek is (harpazō) and means… to snatch out or away, to seize, carry off by force.
He was found (a sense of finding after searching for) at Azotus. So it does seem the Spirit of the Lord literally made him disappear from one place and appear again in another.
One day we will all be caught away as the same Greek word is used in the below verse…
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (I Thess 4:17)
Will Drive You…
- And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness. (Mar 1:12)
- And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. (Luke 4:1)
The Greek word for driveth is (ekballō) and means… to lead one forth or away somewhere with a force which he cannot resist.
Will Send You…
- So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. (Acts 13:4)
Steer You Way From
- After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. (Acts 16:7)
Will Forbid You…
- Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia. (Acts 16:6)
The Holy Ghost Shall Teach You!
What To Say
- For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. (Luke 12:12)
- For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. (Mat 10:20)
- And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4)
- But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. (Mark 13:11)
- Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (Roms 8:26)
All Things
- But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:2)
- Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. (John 15:15)
- For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. (Acts 3:22)
- But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. (1 Cor 2:10)
The Holy Ghost Is A Witness
Is Gods Witness…
- And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us. (Acts 15:8)
- This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. (1 John 5:6)
- Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. (Acts 2:33)
- And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. (Acts 5:32)
The Spirit Bears Witness With Our spirit…
- The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (Rom 8:16)
- Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. (1 John 4:13)
- And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. (1 John 3:24)
- Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before (Heb 10:15)
Declares Us To Be The Epistles Of Christ…
- Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. (2 Cor 3:3)
An epistle is a letter. A letter is written with ink and bear record or be presented as a testimony. In fact, your last will and testimony is a written statement. So a letter can have quite a bit of authority.
We are living letters not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God. We are living testimonials, bearing record, witness.

Gives Us The Power To Witness…
- But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)
To Preach With Boldness…
- And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. (Acts 4:31)
- Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. (1 Cor 2:13)
- Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. (1 Peter 1:12)

He Will Show You Things To Come…

Spoke Through The Prophets…
- For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. (Mark 12:36)
- And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied.. (Luke 1:67)

- For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. (1 Cor 2:11)

- But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Cor 2:14)
- Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit (Eph 3:5)
Will Guide You Into All Truth…
- Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. (John 16:13)
No Man Can Say Jesus Is The Lord But By The Holy Ghost
- Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. (1 Cor 12:3)
The Holy Spirit Gives Instruction…
- Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen. (Acts 1:2)
- As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. (Acts 13:2)
- For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things. (Acts 15:28)
- Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) – (Heb 3:7-11)
The Holy Ghost Appoints Church Oversight…
- Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. (Acts 20:28)
In summary, as you can see from just a tiny portion of highlighted items that being led by the Spirit makes possible it is very exciting indeed.
It certainly feels comforting to know that we can now be led by the Spirit instead of being led by the law. That we can walk with (be accompanied by) the Spirit and be no longer under the law (therefore above the law).
I hope you have found this little study to be a blessing.
