Holy Spirit of Promise (Holy Spirit Names Series)

Continuing our Names & Titles of the Holy Spirit series in this article I am going to look at the term Holy Spirit of Promise in the Bible.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven he instructed his disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the Promise Of The Father comes.

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. (Luke 24:49)

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. (Acts 1:4)

And we know that the promise arrived on the day of Pentecost when they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. (Acts 2:33)

And this promise was for their day, for their children’s day, and continues for all that are far off including our day and beyond.

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. (Acts 2:39)

So The Promise Of The Father Is The Holy Spirit

  • You Receive the Promise of the Spirit Through Faith. (Gal 3:14)
  • And You Are Sealed with That Holy Spirit of Promise (Eph 1:13)

But This Promise Is To Fulfill The Ultimate Promise

In Genesis 22:18 we read about the great promise… And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Paul explains… Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (Gal 3:16)

So this is the promise given to the Fathers? Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. That when Christ comes he will bless all the nations of the earth.

Now, this is where it really gets interesting.

After the flood, we read that… by the families of the sons of Noah were the nations of the earth divided.

These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood. (Gen 10:32)

Let’s check out the map…

So we can see how the nations were divided. In Genesis 11 we read about the tower of Babel and how the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Remember the greater promise that all the nations of the earth will be blessed through the seed – Jesus Christ. This is fulfilled by the Holy Spirit which is called the promise of the father.

So here we see the nations scattered. The confusion of languages. The nations lost to God. From this time forth he now deals with Abraham and his descendants, and hence the promise about all the nations one day being blessed

Now Let’s Look at Something Amazing That Happened on the Day of Pentecost.

It was God regathering the nations to himself. The day of Pentecost and the outpouring of the Spirit was the fulfillment of the promise that all the nations of the earth will be blessed.

Pentecost was the reverse of Babel.

Every Nation Under Heaven

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. (Acts 2:5)

And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. (Acts 2:8-11)

Every nation under heaven?  Really? Yes!!!

I couldn’t find an image of this map to use that didn’t have copyright issues but you can see a good one here: Map of Nations at Pentecost

These Places Were from the Same Areas Divided into Nations by Noah’s Children and Grandchildren.

So yes they were from every nation under heaven. The original division of nations is every nation under heaven.

Now get this…

In Christ, the seed, fulfilled by receiving the Holy Spirit shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. The nations divided at Babel and couldn’t understand each other are now hearing the wonderful works of God. Tongues – languages is again involved.

Only this time it is not the scattering of the nations it is the blessing of them through Jesus Christ.

Paul when preaching the gospel in Lystra said… Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. (Act 14:16)

And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. (Gal 3:8)

And this is why the scriptures say:

  • Children of the Promise Are Counted for the Seed. (Rom 9:8)
  • And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Gal 3:29)
  • As Isaac was, we are the children of promise. (Gal 4:28)
  • We are partakers of his promise (Eph 3:6)

Amen
