You’ve heard this before.
“God orders your steps.”
But if that’s true, why do things feel uncertain sometimes?
Why do plans shift, doors close, and things not go how you thought?
So you start wondering… are my steps really ordered, or am I just figuring this out as I go?
Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”
— Psalm 37:23 (KJV)
“The steps of a good man”
This isn’t talking about a perfect person.
“Good” here isn’t flawless. It’s someone who is aligned with God. Someone who is walking with Him.
That matters, because this promise is relational.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about belonging and walking with God.
Psalm 1:1–2 describes this kind of person. Someone who delights in the law of the Lord and thinks on it daily.
So this is about direction of life, not perfection in every step.
Does that change how you see it?
“Are ordered by the LORD”
This is the part people hold onto.
Ordered.
That means established. Directed. Set in place.
But notice again.
Steps.
Not the whole path at once.
Not the full picture laid out clearly.
Steps.
God is involved in the process, not just the outcome.
Even when a step feels uncertain to you, it isn’t random to Him.
Proverbs 16:9 says, “a man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”
So you plan. But He directs.
Do you see how that works together?
“And he delighteth in his way”
This part is often missed.
God delights in the way of the one walking with Him.
That means He’s not watching from a distance.
He’s involved. He cares. He takes pleasure in the walk itself.
Not just the destination.
That changes the tone completely.
This isn’t cold direction. It’s personal.
So here’s a question.
Do you see your walk with God as something He actually delights in… or just something He evaluates?
What’s actually happening in this moment
Psalm 37 is written in the middle of tension.
The righteous are looking at the wicked prospering.
It feels unfair. Confusing. Backwards.
And David keeps repeating the same idea.
Don’t fret. Don’t compare. Trust the Lord.
So when he says your steps are ordered, he’s not speaking from a place where everything looks perfect.
He’s speaking into a situation where things don’t seem to make sense.
That matters.
Because this verse isn’t for when everything is smooth.
It’s for when you’re tempted to question what God is doing.
How this connects across Scripture
You see this same truth again and again.
Psalm 37:31 says, “The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.”
There’s stability, even if it doesn’t feel like it.
And Proverbs 3:6 says, “in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Again, direction tied to relationship.
God doesn’t promise a path with no challenges.
He promises direction through it.
What’s really going on inside you
Let’s be real.
You want your steps ordered.
But you also want them predictable.
You want to know where things are going.
So when something feels off, you question everything.
Did I miss it? Did I take a wrong turn?
But sometimes the issue isn’t that your steps aren’t ordered.
It’s that they don’t look how you expected.
Is that what’s been happening?
Do you feel unsettled because the path isn’t clear… even though God is still directing it?
What this is calling you into
This verse is calling you to trust the process, not just the outcome.
To keep walking, even when the step in front of you doesn’t make complete sense.
To stay aligned with God, even when the path feels uncertain.
You don’t need to see ten steps ahead.
You need to take the next one in trust.
And as you do, God orders it.
So bring it into your day.
In the situation that feels unclear right now, what would it look like to take the next step, trusting that God is already involved in it?
Bringing it back to what matters
Your steps are not random.
They’re not overlooked.
They’re not outside of God’s care.
If you’re walking with Him, He is directing your steps, even when it feels uncertain.
Even when it doesn’t match your expectations.
Even when it takes time.
So here’s what stays with you.
Are you waiting for the path to feel stable… or are you willing to trust that God is ordering your steps right now?
