You pray for direction.
You ask God to show you His will.
But then you’re still left sitting there, unsure what to do next.
So you start thinking… am I missing something? Or is this just harder than it should be?
Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.
“For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;”
— Colossians 1:9 (KJV)
“Do not cease to pray for you”
This starts with something simple but powerful.
Paul is praying. Continually.
Not once. Not occasionally. Ongoing.
That tells you something.
Understanding God’s will isn’t automatic.
It’s something you grow into through relationship with Him.
It’s something you ask for.
James 1:5 says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.”
So you’re not wrong for asking.
But here’s the question.
Are you asking once and moving on… or staying in it like this verse shows?
“That ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will”
This is the core.
Filled.
Not a little insight. Not occasional clarity.
Filled.
That means it’s meant to become something that shapes your thinking, not just something you visit when you’re stuck.
And notice this.
It’s the knowledge of His will.
Not your preference. Not what feels right.
His will.
That means there’s a shift happening.
You move from trying to get God to align with you… to aligning with Him.
Do you see that shift?
“In all wisdom and spiritual understanding”
This is where it gets practical.
Knowledge alone isn’t enough.
It has to come with wisdom and understanding.
Wisdom is knowing how to apply what you know.
Understanding is seeing clearly what’s actually going on.
So this isn’t just about knowing a verse.
It’s about living it out correctly.
Proverbs 4:7 says, “wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.”
So the goal isn’t just information.
It’s transformation in how you think and live.
That’s different, isn’t it?
What’s actually happening in this moment
This verse is part of a prayer for believers.
Paul is speaking to people who already follow Christ.
And instead of praying for easier circumstances, he prays for something else.
Clarity.
Understanding.
Alignment with God’s will.
That tells you something important.
God’s will isn’t mainly about changing your situation.
It’s about shaping you in the middle of it.
That shifts your expectation.
How this connects across Scripture
You see this same pattern again.
Romans 12:2 says your mind is renewed so you can “prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
So understanding God’s will comes through a changed mind.
And Ephesians 1:17–18 talks about God giving “the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.”
Again, knowledge tied to relationship.
So this isn’t just about knowing what to do.
It’s about knowing Him.
What’s really going on inside you
Let’s be honest.
You want a clear answer for your situation.
What should I do next?
Which direction should I take?
And because you want that answer, you focus on the outcome.
But this verse points somewhere deeper.
It focuses on being filled.
Shaped. Changed. Aligned.
And that can feel slower than you want.
Is that what’s been happening?
Do you feel stuck because you’re waiting for a specific answer… while God is working on how you think?
What this is calling you into
This verse is calling you to stay in the process.
Keep asking.
Keep learning.
Keep aligning your thinking with God’s Word.
Instead of chasing one clear answer, you begin to grow in clarity overall.
Your decisions start to line up naturally with His will because your mind is being shaped.
That’s how this works.
So bring it into your day.
In the situation you’re facing, what would it look like to focus less on getting a quick answer… and more on being filled with God’s way of thinking?
Bringing it back to what matters
God isn’t trying to keep His will hidden from you.
He wants you filled with the knowledge of it.
But that filling happens through relationship, prayer, and growth.
Not quick fixes.
Not instant clarity.
You’re being shaped into someone who can walk in His will, not just someone who occasionally finds it.
So here’s what stays with you.
Are you chasing a specific answer… or are you willing to be filled with the knowledge of His will over time?
