In the Beginning Was Jesus (John Chapter 1)

Jesus is the word made flesh (John 1:14) as we will see throughout this article. Sometimes it is easier to see things when we replace the analogy with the actual meaning. So I am going to play with some scriptures and replace Word with Jesus to get a better appreciation of its meaning.

I would never suggest replacing the actual text because the Word has so much significance but hopefully, you will appreciate where I am going with this as you read on.

First I will quote the actual scripture and then rewrite it with the name of Jesus where the scripture is actually talking about him.

Original:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.  (John 1:1-4)

With Jesus:

In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God. The same Jesus was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Jesus; and without Jesus was not anything made that was made. In Jesus was life; and the life was the light of men.

Let’s slow down and itemize the brilliance of what is being said here:

  • In the beginning, was Jesus
  • Jesus was with God
  • Jesus was God
  • The same Jesus was in the beginning with God
  • All things were made by Jesus
  • Without Jesus was not anything made that was made
  • In Jesus was life, and the life was the light of men

Let’s continue…

Original:

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:19-12)

With Jesus:

Jesus was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. Jesus was in the world, and the world was made by Jesus, and the world knew him not. Jesus came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received Jesus, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Let’s slow down and itemize it all:

  • Jesus is the true light who lights every person that comes into the world.
  • Jesus was in the world
  • The world was made by Jesus
  • The world didn’t know Jesus
  • Jesus came to his own
  • Jesus’ very own creation received him not
  • But as many as received Jesus to them gave he the power to become the sons of God
  • Even to those who believe on the name of Jesus

Let’s continue…

Original:

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. (John 1:15-18)

With Jesus:

And Jesus was made flesh and dwelt among us (and we beheld Jesus’ glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of Jesus, and cried, saying, Jesus was he of whom I spake, Jesus that cometh after me is preferred before me: for Jesus was before me.

And of Jesus fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, Jesus hath declared him.

Let’s slow down and itemize it all:

  • Jesus was made flesh, and dwelt among us
  • We beheld Jesus’ glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth.
  • John bare witness of Jesus
  • And cried, saying, Jesus was he of whom I spake, Jesus that cometh after me is preferred before me: for Jesus was before me.
  • And of Jesus fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
  • For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
  • No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, Jesus hath declared him.

Further studies from these exciting revelations:

Jesus Made Everything

Without Jesus nothing was made that was made. So an exciting study is to look up the word made in the Bible. For example:

1Co 15:22 – For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

2Co 3:6 – Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

2Co 5:21 – For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

2Co 12:9 – My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.

Gal 5:1 – Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Eph 1:6 – To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Eph 2:6 – And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Eph 2:13 – But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Col 1:12 – Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

Tit 3:7 – That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Heb 1:2 – Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Heb 3:14 – For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end
