Born of Water and Spirit: What Jesus Really Required

You can be sincere, searching, even deeply religious… and still miss what Jesus actually required.

That’s not harsh. That’s exactly what happened to Nicodemus.

He came to Jesus at night, full of questions, respect, and belief. But Jesus didn’t affirm his effort. He went straight to the point: “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Not might not. Cannot.

Nicodemus was confused. Like most people are today. He thought Jesus was speaking naturally. But Jesus made it plain: “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

That’s not symbolic language. That’s a doorway. And Jesus said it’s the only way in.

So what does it mean?

Born of water is not about ritual. It’s about burial. When you are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, your old life is laid down. Scripture says we are buried with Him by baptism into death so we can rise in newness of life. This is where forgiveness is applied. Not imagined. Not assumed. Applied.

And then comes the Spirit.

Jesus is the one who baptizes with the Holy Ghost. And when that happens, something undeniable takes place. On the Day of Pentecost, when the Spirit was first poured out, they didn’t sit quietly wondering if anything happened. They spoke with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

That wasn’t confusion. That was confirmation.

The same thing happened again and again. Acts 10. Acts 19. Different people. Different places. Same result. The Spirit filled them, and it spoke through them.

Why?

Because God never intended salvation to be a guess.

The Spirit doesn’t just cleanse you. He testifies that you belong to Him. “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

So now think about this.

Jesus said you must be born of water and Spirit. Then in Acts 2:38, Peter preached the exact response: repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

That’s not a new message. That’s the fulfillment of what Jesus said.

Water washes. Spirit fills. And together, they bring new life.

This isn’t about joining something. It’s about becoming someone new.

When you come out of the water, your past is buried. When the Spirit fills you, heaven moves in. And when the Spirit speaks through you, you don’t have to wonder anymore.

You know.

That’s what Jesus required. And that’s what He still gives.

So the question isn’t, do you believe in being born again?

The question is… have you experienced it?

Because when you’re truly born of water and Spirit, it’s not quiet, it’s not uncertain, and it’s not partial.

It’s real. It’s powerful. And it’s something you can know for sure.

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
