You Can Be Close to Jesus… And Still Drift Away
This one is uncomfortable.
Because when people think about betrayal, they think about distance from God.
But Judas wasn’t far away.
He walked with Jesus.
He heard every teaching.
He saw the miracles up close.
And still… he betrayed Him.
So the real question isn’t just are you around Jesus?
It’s are you actually in Him?
The Betrayal Didn’t Start in a Moment
It’s easy to look at Judas and think it all happened suddenly.
It didn’t.
“Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, and said unto them, What will ye give me…?” (Matthew 26:14–15, KJV).
Notice that.
He initiated it.
The betrayal started long before the silver.
It started in the heart.
That’s how drift works.
It’s not loud at first.
It’s subtle.
A thought here. A compromise there. A slow shift in what matters most.
Nearness Is Not the Same as Relationship
Judas was physically close to Jesus.
But closeness doesn’t equal connection.
Jesus said,
“I am the vine, ye are the branches… he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit” (John 15:5, KJV).
Abiding is different.
It’s not just being around Him.
It’s staying connected to Him.
Receiving from Him.
Letting Him shape you.
Judas was near the vine… but not abiding in it.
And eventually, that gap showed.
The Warning Sign: Loving Something More Than God
Let’s get to the root.
Why did Judas betray Jesus?
Money.
“What will ye give me…?” (Matthew 26:15, KJV).
Thirty pieces of silver.
That tells you something.
There was already a competing love in his heart.
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21, KJV).
Your heart follows what you value.
So when something else starts to matter more than God… drift begins.
It doesn’t have to be money.
It can be approval. Comfort. Control.
Anything you hold tighter than God becomes dangerous.
When Your Heart Drifts, Your Decisions Follow
Judas didn’t wake up one day and decide to betray Jesus out of nowhere.
His heart had already moved.
And once the heart shifts, actions follow.
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23, KJV).
That’s why this matters.
Because what you allow in your heart today… shapes your decisions tomorrow.
Drift internally always shows up externally.
The Moment It Became Final
There’s a chilling moment in Scripture.
“And after the sop Satan entered into him” (John 13:27, KJV).
That didn’t happen randomly.
It happened after a series of choices.
Ignored conviction.
Hidden motives.
Unaddressed compromise.
Then the door fully opened.
That’s the danger of ongoing drift.
If you keep ignoring what God is showing you… eventually your heart becomes hardened.
The Difference Between Judas and Peter
This is important.
Both failed.
Judas betrayed Jesus.
Peter denied Him.
But their outcomes were completely different.
Peter broke down and returned.
Judas ran away and never came back.
“Then Peter remembered… and went out, and wept bitterly” (Matthew 26:75, KJV).
The difference wasn’t failure.
It was response.
When conviction comes, do you run toward God… or away from Him?
That determines everything.
External Faith vs. Internal Surrender
Judas looked like a disciple.
He had the position.
The role.
The outward appearance.
But inside, something wasn’t surrendered.
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof” (2 Timothy 3:5, KJV).
That’s not just about churches.
That’s personal.
You can look right on the outside… and still be drifting on the inside.
That’s why this has to go deeper than appearance.
Pentecost: What a Fully Aligned Heart Looks Like
Now look at the contrast.
After everything… after failure, fear, confusion…
Something changed at Pentecost.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:4, KJV).
These were the same people.
But now they were aligned.
No hidden agendas.
No competing loyalties.
One accord.
That’s the difference.
Judas held onto something that pulled him away.
The others let go… and were filled.
How Drift Starts in Your Life
Let’s bring this closer.
Drift doesn’t start with betrayal.
It starts with small things.
Ignoring conviction.
Justifying compromise.
Letting your time with God slip.
Letting other things take priority.
It feels harmless at first.
But it adds up.
And over time, your heart slowly moves.
How to Pass the Betrayal Test
This isn’t about fear.
It’s about awareness.
Here’s what helps you stay aligned:
Stay honest with God
Don’t hide what’s going on inside.
Respond quickly to conviction
Don’t delay when God shows you something.
Keep your priorities in check
Watch what’s becoming too important.
Stay connected, not just involved
Abide in Him, not just around Him.
Final Question
Are you close to Jesus… or connected to Him?
Because Judas was close.
But he wasn’t surrendered.
And in the end, what’s in your heart matters more than where you stand physically.
So check it honestly.
Before small drift becomes something bigger.
Because the goal isn’t just to walk with Him.
It’s to stay with Him.
