The King of Glory Is Our Father
Friends, hear this with fresh fire. The LORD reigneth, He is clothed with majesty (Psalm 93:1). He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending (Revelation 1:8). He dwelleth in the light which no man can approach unto (1 Timothy 6:16), yet He bends low so you and I can whisper, Abba, Father (Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6). ‘
At Sinai, the mountain trembled (Exodus 19:16-19). In a cave, a prophet heard a still small voice (1 Kings 19:11-12). On Galilee, the storm bowed to a single word (Mark 4:39-41). On Patmos, John fell as dead before the risen Christ and heard, Fear not (Revelation 1:17). Behold our God.
Majesty that makes us tremble. Fatherhood that makes us safe.
We will not treat Him lightly. We will not come in dread. We will come boldly to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16), with reverence and godly fear (Hebrews 12:28-29). Praise be to God.
Awe That Awakens: The Fear Of The LORD
Brethren, have you ever stood under a sky so bright you forgot to breathe, or by a waterfall so loud it silenced your thoughts? That is a hint of what Scripture calls the fear of the LORD.
Not a crippling terror, but reverence mingled with love. The voice of the LORD is powerful, the voice of the LORD is full of majesty (Psalm 29:4). The LORD reigneth, He is clothed with majesty (Psalm 93:1).
Isaiah saw the King, the LORD of hosts, heard Holy, holy, holy, felt the doorposts shake, and cried, Woe is me (Isaiah 6:3-5). Job heard from the whirlwind, Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth (Job 38:4), then answered, I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes (Job 42:6). Friends, awe humbles us, and humility heals us.
Yet the same God who thunders can whisper. Elijah did not meet Him in wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a still small voice (1 Kings 19:11-12).
The same Lord who wrapped Sinai with lightning walked the sea and muzzled it with Peace, be still; the disciples feared exceedingly and asked, What manner of man is this (Mark 4:39-41). John met Him in blazing glory and fell as dead, and Jesus touched him, Fear not (Revelation 1:17).
So we learn the rhythm of holy fear: Stand in awe, and sin not (Psalm 4:4). The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling (Psalm 2:11). Praise the Lord.
His Name, His Nature: Knowing God By What He Calls Himself
Praise be to God, He tells us who He is by His names and titles. Each name is a doorway into His heart.
- YHWH, I AM THAT I AM (Exodus 3:14). He is not borrowed life. He is life. Jehovah Shammah, the LORD is there (Ezekiel 48:35). Wherever you stand in faith, He is already there.
- El Shaddai, God Almighty (Genesis 17:1). When the mountain ahead sneers at your strength, remember His.
- El Elyon, Most High. None is higher, none is over Him.
- Adonai, Lord and Master. Every tongue will confess Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:11).
- Jehovah Sabaoth, the LORD of hosts. David faced Goliath in the name of the LORD of hosts (1 Samuel 17:45). Armies obey Him. So do giants.
- Jehovah-Jireh, the LORD will provide (Genesis 22:14). On the mountain of surrender, He sees and supplies.
- Jehovah-Rapha, the LORD that healeth thee (Exodus 15:26). He binds bodies and mends souls.
- Jehovah-Shalom, the LORD our peace (Judges 6:24). In the noise of fear, He is the quiet center.
- The Holy One of Israel who is thrice holy (Isaiah 6:3).
- Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8; 22:13). He opens the story and writes the last line.
- King of kings, and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). Every crown is on loan.

Our Father: From Hints To Fullness
Thank you Lord, that the High King calls us sons and daughters.
Old Testament hints:
God called Israel His son (Exodus 4:22). He carried them as a father doth his son through the wilderness (Deuteronomy 1:31). Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear Him, for He remembereth that we are dust (Psalm 103:13-14).
He yearned, Is Ephraim my dear son (Jeremiah 31:20). He lamented, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled (Isaiah 1:2), and asked, If then I be a father, where is mine honour (Malachi 1:6).
He chastens in love, for whom the LORD loveth He correcteth (Proverbs 3:11-12). He promised David a son, I will be his Father, and he shall be My son (2 Samuel 7:14), echoing in Psalm 89:26. The coming Messiah would be The mighty God, The Everlasting Father in kingly care (Isaiah 9:6).
New Testament fullness:
Jesus said, He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father (John 14:9). I and My Father are one (John 10:30). In Gethsemane He prayed, Abba, Father (Mark 14:36). He taught us, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name (Matthew 6:9).
By faith we receive power to become the sons of God (John 1:12). We are born again (John 3:3). The Spirit teaches us to cry Abba, Father (Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6). We come boldly for mercy and grace (Hebrews 4:16).
And when we wander, the Father runs. The prodigal was met a great way off, kissed, restored (Luke 15:20). Friends, the Holy One of Sinai is the Father who runs, and the Son who saves. Praise the Lord.
Living Like His Children: Awe, Obedience, Love, Trust
Brethren, doctrine must become devotion. Majesty must become maturity.
Worship with weight: Let us have grace to serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear, for our God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:28-29). Begin prayer with Hallowed be Thy name.
Walk in holiness: As obedient children, be holy in all conduct, for I am holy (1 Peter 1:14-16). The family likeness matters.
Practice mercy: Be ye kind, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you (Ephesians 4:32). Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful (Luke 6:36). Walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us (Ephesians 5:2).
Rest in care: Your Father knoweth what you need (Matthew 6:8). If earthly fathers give good gifts, how much more your Father (Matthew 7:11). Casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you (1 Peter 5:7). Be careful for nothing; pray about everything (Philippians 4:6). He counts your hairs and says, Fear ye not therefore (Matthew 10:31; Luke 12:7).
Stand secure: If God be for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31). He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High is covered (Psalm 91). You are no more strangers, but of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19). You are heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17).
Keep growing: Having these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves, perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1). Humble yourselves and He will lift you (James 4:10). Friends, awe kills pride; adoption kills fear.
Patterns That Preach: From Glory Veiled To Glory Revealed
Praise be to God, Scripture sings one song from Genesis to Revelation.
Glory then and now: The cloud filled the Tabernacle and Temple (Exodus 40:34; 1 Kings 8:10-11). Moses could not see God’s face, only His back, and came down shining (Exodus 33:20-23; 34:29). Then the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory (John 1:14).
On the mount, the Father said, This is My beloved Son; eyewitnesses reported His majesty (Matthew 17:1-5; 2 Peter 1:16-17). At the end, the Lamb is the light of the city; no sun required (Revelation 21:23).
The perfect King: The prophets promised a righteous Son of David (Jeremiah 23:5). He came lowly, returns King of kings, and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). The Father says in Psalm 2, Thou art My Son; kiss the Son and trust in Him (Psalm 2:7-8, 12).
Types fulfilled: Lambs pointed to the Lamb of God. Melchizedek hinted at a better priesthood realized in Christ (Hebrews 7). Abraham’s knife stopped, but He spared not His own Son for us all (Romans 8:32). Immanuel means God with us (Matthew 1:23).
Jesus said, Before Abraham was, I am (John 8:58). He is Alpha and Omega (Revelation 22:13), the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:8), the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person (Hebrews 1:3). He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father (John 14:9).
Final promise: Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men. He will dwell with us, wipe away all tears (Revelation 21:3-4). He that overcometh shall inherit all things; I will be his God, and he shall be My son (Revelation 21:7). Friends, the story ends with family, face to face.
A Treasury For The Road: Promises To Carry
- Known and loved: Your Father knoweth before you ask (Matthew 6:8). The very hairs of your head are all numbered (Luke 12:7).
- Open access: Come boldly unto the throne of grace for mercy and help (Hebrews 4:16).
- Kept by power: If God be for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31). He that dwelleth is covered (Psalm 91).
- Provision certain: Seek ye first His kingdom, and all these things will be added (Matthew 6:33). Jehovah-Jireh still provides (Genesis 22:14).
- A real family: You are of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19).
- A sure inheritance: An inheritance incorruptible is reserved in heaven for you (1 Peter 1:3-4). The Spirit is the earnest of it (Ephesians 1:13-14).
- Unbreakable love: Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ (Romans 8:38-39). No man is able to pluck you out of the Father’s hand (John 10:29).
- Purpose in pain: A Father’s chastening produces holiness and peaceable fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:5-11).
- Glory ahead: We are being changed from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). Those He justified, He also glorified (Romans 8:30). When He shall appear, we shall be like Him (1 John 3:2). Praise the Lord.
Holy Urgency: A Call To Decision
Brethren, shall we toy with sin when the Holy One calls us higher? Shall we live as orphans when the Everlasting Father opens His arms? Serve the LORD with fear. Rejoice with trembling (Psalm 2:11).
Cleanse yourselves, dearly beloved, perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1). Walk in love as Christ loved you (Ephesians 5:2). Cast your care where it belongs, into the Father’s hands (1 Peter 5:7). Trust, obey, adore. Repeat it. Live it.
Friends, now is a good time to pray.
A Prayer For Those Who Stand At The Crossroads
Praise the Lord. Heavenly Father, You are holy and majestic, and there is none like You. Hallowed be Thy name. Thank You that in Jesus we see Your glory and Your heart, and by the Spirit we cry Abba, Father. We humble ourselves under Your mighty hand.
We ask for clean hearts, steady feet, and a childlike trust. Jehovah-Jireh, provide. Jehovah-Rapha, heal. Jehovah-Shalom, calm our storm. Teach us to live with reverence and joy, to walk in love and holiness, to cast every care upon You.
Keep us from falling and present us faultless before the presence of Your glory with exceeding joy. To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen (Jude 24-25).
