What Does Be Still and Know That I Am God Mean

The Battle Is the Lord’s

BE STILL – AND KNOW WHO IS IN CONTROL

Brethren, there comes a time when God says, “Enough.” Enough of striving. Enough of panicking. Enough of trying to fix what only He can fix. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10 KJV) That’s not a whisper of comfort alone – it’s a command of confidence.

It’s a call to stop flailing and start trusting. To stop running and start resting – not in passivity, but in power. Because the God who spoke creation into being has not lost His voice, His throne, or His authority.

The God who parted the Red Sea is still making a way where there seems to be no way. The same God who shut the mouths of lions still silences your enemies. The same God who said “Peace, be still” to the storm now says, “Be still” to your soul. Praise be to God – He is still God, and He will be exalted in the earth!

THE CALL TO STAND STILL

“Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD.” (Exodus 14:13)

Israel stood trapped – Red Sea before them, Pharaoh behind them. They cried, they blamed, they panicked. Sound familiar? How often do we do the same when life corners us? Yet Moses cried out, “The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14:14)

Friends, standing still doesn’t mean giving up – it means standing with God. It means planting your feet beside His promises when fear screams otherwise. It’s faith in motion, not idleness. Because right after God said “stand still,” He said, “Go forward.” Faith always moves forward even when the sea hasn’t split yet.

Have you ever walked toward what looks impossible? That’s what faith does. It walks toward the Red Sea while God’s wind starts to blow. And when you take that step, He parts what looked impassable.

THE GOD WHO FIGHTS FOR YOU

Praise the Lord – He fights for His people! “The LORD shall fight for you.” That’s not a metaphor – it’s a reality. You might not see Him swinging the sword, but you’ll see the victory in the aftermath. The Egyptians – those problems, addictions, and enemies – “ye shall see them again no more for ever.” (Exodus 14:13)

God doesn’t need your panic; He needs your presence. Just stand where He told you. The world says “fight harder.” God says, “Stand still and let Me fight for you.” The world says “fix it.” God says, “Watch Me do what no man can.”

Standing still is an act of war – because you’re refusing to surrender to fear. You’re declaring, “God, I’m staying with You.”

GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

What a promise! He’s not distant. He’s not late. He’s present. Right here. Right now. When your world shakes, He is unshaken. When the mountains fall, when the waters roar, when kingdoms crumble – He remains.

Therefore, we will not fear. (Psalm 46:2-3) Let that sink in. Fear has no authority in a heart that’s hidden in God. When you know He’s your refuge, you stop reacting to every threat. You rest because you know who is in control.

THE RIVER THAT MAKES GLAD

“There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God.” (Psalm 46:4)

That river, brethren, is the Holy Ghost. Jesus said, “He that believeth on me… out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38) That’s the river that brings joy in chaos, peace in pressure, and strength in sorrow.

God is in the midst of His people. (Psalm 46:5) He’s not watching from afar; He’s living within you. “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost?” (1 Corinthians 6:19) The same Spirit that hovered over the waters in Genesis now dwells in you. How could you be moved when the unmovable God lives inside you?

THE GOD WHO SPEAKS AND THE EARTH MELTS

“The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.” (Psalm 46:6)

Friends, when God speaks, everything changes. The same voice that said, “Let there be light” still speaks today. The same voice that called Lazarus out of the tomb still calls life out of death. And the same voice that thundered on Sinai now whispers to your heart, “Peace.”

The Holy Spirit breathes where He wills. “Thou hearest the sound thereof.” (John 3:8) That sound – the voice of God – still moves mountains and melts hearts.

COME, BEHOLD THE WORKS OF THE LORD

“Come, behold the works of the LORD.” (Psalm 46:8)

Look around. Has He not kept you? Has He not provided? Has He not broken the bow, cut the spear, burned the chariot? (Psalm 46:9) That’s what He does – He breaks what once broke you. He disarms what once bound you. He silences the war that once raged inside you.

He makes wars to cease. What war has been raging in you – fear, guilt, doubt? Be still. The battle is not yours; it’s God’s. The Lord of hosts is with you; the God of Jacob is your refuge. (Psalm 46:11)

BE STILL – AND KNOW

This is not a suggestion. It’s a summons. God says, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)

Knowing comes through stillness. You’ll never know His strength until you stop striving in your own. You’ll never know His voice until you quiet the noise. You’ll never know His power until you surrender your panic.

He’s not asking for your help – He’s asking for your heart. Be still, and let God prove He’s still God. Praise be to God – He always was, He always is, and He always will be.

REST IN THE LORD

“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him.” (Psalm 37:7)

When everything in you wants to fight, fret, or flee, stop and rest. Because “the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.” (Psalm 37:39)

Friends, the wicked may rage, the world may shake, but the Lord upholds the righteous with His hand. (Psalm 37:24) The meek shall inherit the earth. (Psalm 37:11) The Lord knows your days. (Psalm 37:18) He shall not forsake His saints. (Psalm 37:28)

So be still. Stand fast. Walk forward. The Lord shall help and deliver you. (Psalm 37:40)

Praise the Lord! The command still stands: Be still and know that He is God. When you stand still with Him, you stand victorious. When you walk by faith, you walk through what others drown in. When you rest in His promise, you’ll one day look back and say, “The Lord hath triumphed gloriously – the horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea!”

Glory to God. The battle belongs to Him.

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
