(Romans 8:9–2 Timothy 1:14, KJV)
Brethren, this is not a small matter. This is eternity’s dividing line – with Christ or without Him. The Word of God says plainly, “If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” (Romans 8:9). Not half His. Not partly His. None of His. Think about that. You can carry a Bible, join a church, even sing the hymns, yet if His Spirit does not dwell in you – you are still outside the fold.
The Spirit Marks Who Belongs to Christ
Jesus said, “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Birth is not a ceremony. It’s a beginning. The Spirit breathes life into dead hearts and calls things that were not into being. Have you been born again, or are you still trying to patch up the old life? The Spirit doesn’t polish the flesh – He creates something new.
Paul says, “Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost… ye are bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). Imagine it – the living God chooses to dwell inside you! When you walk, speak, think, and live, He wants His Spirit to shine through you. That’s not religion. That’s ownership. You’re His property, sealed with the blood of Christ and inhabited by His Spirit.
The Test of Genuine Faith
Paul presses the question home: “Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?” (2 Corinthians 13:5). It’s not about quoting Scripture; it’s about Christ being real inside. Does your life echo His voice? Does His Spirit convict, comfort, and correct you? Without that inner witness, you may have knowledge, but not life.
And oh, how tenderly the Lord assures us: “After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13–14). The Spirit is God’s down payment, heaven’s proof that you belong. The world may question your worth, but the Spirit whispers, “You are Mine.”
The Spirit’s Work of Renewal
Titus 3:5 declares, “According to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” The Spirit doesn’t merely clean us; He makes us new. Like rain after drought, He softens the soil of the heart. Old habits die. New desires rise. This is the miracle of mercy.
Paul asked the Galatians, “Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” (Galatians 3:2). Faith opens the door. You don’t earn the Spirit; you believe the Word. You surrender. You trust. And heaven responds with life.
The Witness Within
“Hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us” (1 John 3:24). Friends, this is not guesswork. It’s knowing. The Spirit testifies that God’s life pulses in you. “Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit” (1 John 4:13). The believer doesn’t walk by sight but by assurance – an inner certainty that no argument can erase.
And how do we keep the faith amid the noise of this world? “That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us” (2 Timothy 1:14). The Spirit not only identifies us as Christ’s but strengthens us to hold the truth when others let it slip.
The Spirit Proves Sonship
Paul continues in Romans 8:14–16: “As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” The Spirit leads – not drags. He teaches us to walk as sons, not slaves. And when your heart cries, “Abba, Father,” that’s not emotion – it’s adoption (Galatians 4:6). God Himself sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts so that we might know we are loved.
And oh, how beautifully this ties together! “By one Spirit are we all baptized into one body” (1 Corinthians 12:13). We are joined to Christ and to one another not by water alone, but by the Spirit’s baptism – a living union.
God’s Promise from Long Ago
Even in the days of Ezekiel, God spoke of this mystery: “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you” (Ezekiel 36:26–27). This wasn’t symbolic poetry. It was prophecy fulfilled in Christ. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now gives us power to obey.
Jesus Himself foretold it: “He shall give you another Comforter… for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” (John 14:16–17). The Lord who once walked beside us now walks within us. The Spirit is not a distant force – He is the indwelling presence of Christ’s own heart.
The Love That Marks the Believer
“The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost” (Romans 5:5). This is how you know you belong to Christ – love flows where bitterness once ruled. The Spirit fills the inner man with the same love that hung upon the cross.
Peter said it plainly: “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God… through sanctification of the Spirit” (1 Peter 1:2). The Spirit sets us apart, not by robes or rituals, but by holiness of heart.
And Paul concludes it with thunderous certainty: “He… hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts” (2 Corinthians 1:21–22). The seal means ownership. The earnest means promise. You are marked, secured, and claimed by God Himself.
The Call to Examine and Believe
So I ask you, brethren – does His Spirit dwell in you? Not in theory, not in talk, but in truth? Without Him, you do not belong to Christ. With Him, you have life, sonship, and the promise of glory.
O my soul, do not rest until you can say, “Christ in me, the hope of glory.” The Spirit of God calls. The heart that yields will be filled. And when that happens, you’ll know – beyond shadow, beyond fear – that you belong to Him, and He belongs to you.
Call to Action: The Question That Demands an AnswerIn Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do? And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
