The Holy Spirit Bears Witness to Christ in Us and the Life We Have in Him

The Holy Spirit Bears Witness to Christ in Us

The Spirit Gives Life Through Christ

Brethren, life without the Spirit is only a shadow of living. The flesh may move, think, and labor, but true life – eternal, God-breathed life – comes only by the Spirit through Christ.

Romans 8:10–11 declares, “If Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” That same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us, quickening these mortal bodies. What power! What promise!

Jesus said plainly, “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing” (John 6:63). How many chase after things that profit nothing, ignoring the One who gives breath to their soul?

We can memorize the letter of Scripture, but as 2 Corinthians 3:6 warns, “The letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life.” Words without the Spirit are empty shells. But when the Holy Ghost breathes, the Word becomes a living flame.

We were saved, not by our effort or ceremony, but, as Titus 3:5 tells us, “by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” That renewal is not a one-time event. It’s a daily wind of grace that keeps the soul alive. Ezekiel 36:27 promises, “I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes.” Without that Spirit, obedience is drudgery; with Him, it’s delight.

Job 33:4 declares, “The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.” Think about that – every breath in your lungs is a sermon from Heaven reminding you: you are sustained by God.

When Jesus appeared to His disciples after the resurrection, He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive ye the Holy Ghost’ (John 20:22). The same breath that once animated Adam now ignites believers. And so Galatians 5:25 exhorts, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Life in the Spirit is not theory – it’s a walk, a rhythm of obedience, moment by moment.

The Spirit Reveals and Confirms Christ in Us

O my soul, what a mystery – that the Lord of Glory should dwell in clay vessels! Galatians 2:20 proclaims, “Christ liveth in me.” The Spirit makes that truth more than words; He makes it experience. When you wake with peace that passes understanding, when conviction cuts through your pride, when love flows where bitterness used to reign – that’s Christ living in you.

Colossians 1:27 says this is “the hope of glory.” The Spirit pulls back the curtain so you can see it for yourself. John 14:20 captures the beauty of it: “Ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.” Not theory – knowledge. The Spirit makes this union personal.

1 Corinthians 6:17 declares, “He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” Can you grasp that? Joined – inseparably, eternally, vitally. 2 Corinthians 13:5 presses us to self-examine: “Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you?” Oh, how many churchgoers speak of Christ but don’t know His indwelling?

But God hasn’t left us guessing. Galatians 4:6 tells us, “God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” That cry is not learned in seminary – it’s birthed in the heart by the Spirit. 1 John 3:24 assures us, “Hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.” 1 John 4:13 repeats it: “Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.”

The same Spirit strengthens us, as Ephesians 3:16–17 says, “to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith.” He roots Christ deeper with every trial, every prayer, every tear.

The Spirit Bears Witness and Seals Our Identity

Friends, in a world confused about identity, the Spirit Himself steps forward as witness and seal. Romans 8:16 shouts this truth: “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.” Not imagination – witness. The Holy Ghost testifies louder than your doubts.

2 Corinthians 1:22 says God “hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.” That’s the down payment of eternity. Ephesians 1:13–14 echoes it: “After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise… until the redemption of the purchased possession.” What security! What grace!

So don’t grieve that precious presence. Ephesians 4:30 warns, “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed.” Sin dulls His voice, but surrender restores it. 1 John 5:6 declares, “It is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.” John 15:26 confirms, “He shall testify of me.” The Holy Ghost’s ministry is not to spotlight Himself, but to magnify Jesus.

Even Hebrews 10:15–16 says, “Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us.” He writes the law of God on the heart, not on stone tablets. Romans 5:5 explains the result: “The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost.” When love overflows where hate once lived, that’s the witness of Heaven. 2 Corinthians 5:5 seals it – God “hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.” The very Spirit within you is the signature of divine ownership.

The Spirit Empowers Us to Live Christ’s Life

Brethren, the Spirit does not merely inform us of Christ; He transforms us into His likeness. Philippians 1:19–21 says the “supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ” enables Christ to be magnified in our body, whether by life or by death. Do you see it? This is not ordinary living – this is divine empowerment.

Romans 8:13–14 declares that through the Spirit we mortify the deeds of the body and are led as sons of God. Without the Spirit, temptation reigns; with Him, sin dies. And as we yield, the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance – blooms within us (Galatians 5:22–23). That fruit is proof that Christ’s character has taken root.

John 16:14–15 says, “He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” The Spirit’s goal is simple – to make Jesus visible in your life. Acts 1:8 reminds us, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” Not talk – power. Power to witness. Power to forgive. Power to endure.

2 Timothy 1:14 urges us, “That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost.” Guard the treasure of truth. Romans 15:13 describes the outcome: “that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” True hope is never self-generated; it’s Spirit-breathed. 1 Thessalonians 1:5 confirms, “Our gospel came not in word only, but in power, and in the Holy Ghost.” Words convince the mind; the Spirit converts the heart.

And finally, hear the Lord’s promise in John 7:38–39: “He that believeth on me… out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” Rivers, not drops. The Spirit is that living water, overflowing from the heart that has made room for Christ.

A Call to the Living

O soul, have you heard His witness within you? The Spirit still breathes. The Spirit still calls. The Spirit still gives life. Don’t settle for religion without regeneration, for motion without presence, for words without breath. The Spirit bears witness to Christ in you – the living, risen, reigning Christ. And where He dwells, death cannot.

Let every believer pray, “Come, Holy Spirit, make this truth my reality.” For if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He shall quicken your mortal body. The Spirit’s voice is clear – life in Christ is not tomorrow’s promise; it’s today’s power.

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
