I used to think growth with God meant trying harder. More discipline. More effort. Just push through and become better. But if you’ve ever tried that, you already know how it goes. You do well for a while, then something slips. Old habits show up again. Thoughts you thought were gone come back. And you’re left wondering… why does change feel so inconsistent?
That’s where this truth hits different. You are not called to self-improvement. You are called to sanctification.
And sanctification is not powered by you trying harder. It’s powered by the Spirit of God and the truth of His Word working together inside you.
Let’s walk through that.
What Sanctification Actually Means
The word sanctified simply means set apart. Made holy. Pulled out of one way of living and brought into another.
Jesus said, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” in John 17:17.
Notice that. Truth is not just information. It’s a tool God uses to change you.
Sanctification is not about looking holy on the outside. It’s about being transformed on the inside until your life starts reflecting who God already says you are.
And here’s the part that frees you. You are not the one doing the deep work. God is.
The Spirit Does the Inner Work
There are things in you that behavior modification will never fix. You can control actions for a while, but what about desires? What about reactions that come out before you even think?
That’s where the Holy Spirit steps in.
The Spirit of God doesn’t just correct behavior. He changes nature. He deals with the root, not just the fruit.
You ever notice how some reactions just start changing over time? Things that used to trigger you don’t hit the same. Old cravings lose their grip. That’s not random. That’s the Spirit working from the inside out.
Galatians talks about the fruit of the Spirit. Fruit grows naturally when the root is healthy. You don’t tape fruit onto a tree. It shows up because of what’s happening beneath the surface.
That’s what the Spirit is doing in you.
The Truth Renews the Mind
Now here’s where a lot of people miss it. The Spirit works, but He works with something. That something is truth.
Romans 12:2 says to be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
So while the Spirit is changing your heart, the truth is reshaping how you think.
Because let’s be honest. A lot of struggle comes from believing the wrong thing. About God. About yourself. About what’s possible.
You can’t live differently if you keep thinking the same way.
The Word of God starts correcting those inner beliefs. It exposes lies you didn’t even realize you were carrying. It replaces them with what God actually says.
And over time, your thinking shifts. Then your decisions shift. Then your life follows.
Spirit and Truth Work Together
Here’s the key. It’s not the Spirit alone. And it’s not truth alone. It’s both.
Truth without the Spirit can become dry knowledge. You know verses, but nothing changes.
The Spirit without truth can feel like emotion without direction. You feel stirred, but don’t know what to stand on.
But when the Spirit and the truth come together, that’s where real transformation happens.
The Spirit makes the Word alive to you. The Word gives the Spirit something to build with.
It’s like breath and body. One without the other doesn’t function the same.
Why This Process Takes Time
This is the part that can frustrate people. Sanctification is not instant.
You can be saved in a moment, but transformed over time.
Why? Because God is not just changing what you do. He’s changing who you are at a deep level.
And that process involves layers.
Sometimes God will deal with one area of your life, and you feel breakthrough. Then later, something else surfaces. Not because you’re going backwards, but because He’s going deeper.
Philippians 1:6 says He who began a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
That means this is ongoing. God is committed to finishing what He started in you.
Your Part in Sanctification
So if the Spirit and truth are doing the work, what’s your role?
Stay yielded. Stay connected. Stay in the Word.
You don’t have to force transformation, but you do have to position yourself for it.
Spend time with God even when you don’t feel it. Let the Word get in you, not just pass by you. Pay attention to the nudges of the Spirit.
And when conviction comes, don’t run from it. That’s not condemnation. That’s God refining you.
It’s like sitting in sunlight. You don’t force yourself to grow. You just stay in the light, and growth happens.
What This Looks Like in Real Life
This is not just a church concept. This shows up in everyday moments.
It’s choosing patience when your natural reaction is frustration. It’s responding with kindness when everything in you wants to clap back. It’s walking away from something you used to run toward.
Not because you’re trying to prove something, but because something inside you has changed.
That’s sanctification.
It’s subtle at times, but powerful over time.
The Confidence You Can Have
Here’s what you need to hold onto. If you belong to God, He is actively working in you right now.
Even in the areas that feel slow. Even in the struggles you’re tired of dealing with.
You are not stuck. You are being shaped.
The Spirit is working. The truth is doing its job.
And over time, your life will start to reflect the work that’s been happening inside all along.
So don’t quit just because you don’t see instant results.
Stay with Him. Stay in His Word.
Because sanctified by the Spirit and the truth is not just a phrase.
It’s the process that turns who you used to be into who God already sees.
