Power for Witness, Not for Show

Power for Witness

Let’s be honest.

It’s easy to get drawn to what looks powerful.

Bold preaching. Strong moments. Things that grab attention. And if we’re not careful, we start thinking that power is about how something appears.

How it sounds. How it impresses. How it lands on people.

But Scripture points us in a different direction.

The Spirit’s power was never given for show.

It was given for witness.

And once you see that clearly, it changes how you approach everything.

What Power Was Actually Given For

When Jesus spoke about receiving power, He tied it directly to one thing.

Witness.

Not performance. Not attention. Not building an image.

Witness.

That means testifying. Speaking. Representing Him.

It’s about making Him known.

So the purpose of power is not to make you look strong.

It’s to make Him known through you.

And that shift matters more than most people realize.

The Subtle Drift Toward Performance

Here’s where things can quietly go off track.

You start with the right intention. You want to be used by God.

But over time, there’s a pull.

To be seen. To be effective. To feel like what you’re doing is making an impact.

And slowly, without even noticing, the focus shifts.

From being a witness to trying to produce something impressive.

From depending on the Spirit to relying on presentation.

From truth to appearance.

It’s subtle.

But it changes everything.

What a True Witness Looks Like

Let’s bring it back to what a witness actually is.

A witness doesn’t create the message.

They share what they’ve seen and know.

It’s simple.

It’s honest.

It’s real.

And when the Spirit empowers you as a witness, it’s not about making you perform.

It’s about giving you boldness and clarity to speak the truth.

Even when it’s uncomfortable.

Even when it’s not popular.

Even when it doesn’t look impressive on the surface.

That’s real power.

Power That Points Away From You

Here’s the key.

Real spiritual power doesn’t draw attention to you.

It points away from you.

It brings focus back to Jesus.

When someone hears you speak and walks away thinking more about you than about Him, something is off.

But when the Spirit is working, the result is different.

People become aware of truth.

They feel conviction.

They recognize something beyond human effort.

And that points them to God.

Not to you.

Why Showmanship Falls Short

Let’s be honest about this.

You can create moments that look powerful.

You can say the right things. Use the right tone. Build something that feels impactful.

But if it’s driven by human effort alone, it doesn’t carry lasting weight.

It might impress for a moment.

But it won’t transform.

Because transformation comes from the Spirit, not from presentation.

And this is where many people feel the difference.

They’ve seen things that look powerful, but leave no lasting change.

That’s because it was show, not witness.

The Boldness That Comes From the Spirit

Now here’s the other side.

When the Spirit empowers you as a witness, something changes inside you.

You become bold.

Not loud for the sake of it.

But steady.

Clear.

Unashamed.

You speak truth even when it costs something.

You don’t shrink back because of fear.

And here’s the important part.

That boldness doesn’t come from personality.

It comes from the Spirit.

Which means anyone can walk in it.

Not just the naturally confident.

When It Feels Simple, Not Impressive

This is where some people miss it.

They think if it’s not dramatic, it’s not powerful.

But a lot of Spirit-led witness looks simple.

A conversation.

A word at the right time.

A quiet moment where truth is spoken clearly.

It doesn’t always look impressive.

But it carries weight.

Because the Spirit is behind it.

And sometimes those simple moments have more impact than the ones that look big on the outside.

Staying Aligned With the Right Purpose

So how do you stay aligned?

You keep your focus on why the power is given.

Not for show.

For witness.

That means you check your motives.

Are you trying to impress, or are you trying to be faithful?

Are you relying on your ability, or are you depending on the Spirit?

Are you pointing people to yourself, or to Jesus?

These are the questions that keep you grounded.

When You Feel Pressure to Perform

Let’s bring it down to where this actually hits.

There are moments where you feel pressure.

To say something a certain way.

To come across a certain way.

To make sure it lands well.

That’s where you have to pause.

Because that pressure is often tied to performance.

And the Spirit doesn’t work through pressure like that.

He works through surrender.

So instead of trying to perform, you step back and say,

God, I’m available. Lead me.

And then you respond.

Simply.

Honestly.

The Power That Produces Real Change

Here’s the result of staying in this place.

People don’t just hear words.

They encounter truth.

Something shifts inside them.

Not because of how impressive it was.

But because the Spirit was working through it.

That’s real impact.

Not temporary.

Lasting.

And that’s what witness is meant to do.

Living This Out Daily

So what does this look like moving forward?

It looks like staying simple.

You don’t have to make things look powerful.

You stay faithful to speak what God puts on your heart.

You stay sensitive to the Spirit’s leading.

You don’t chase attention.

You don’t measure success by reactions.

You trust that if the Spirit is working, that’s enough.

The Right Kind of Power

At the end of the day, this comes down to understanding what kind of power you actually want.

Power that draws attention to you.

Or power that points people to Jesus.

One fades.

The other transforms.

So you stay grounded in this truth.

The Spirit’s power was never meant for show.

It was given so you could be a witness.

Clear.

Faithful.

And led by Him.

And when you live that way, you don’t just look like something is happening.

Something real is happening.

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
