You ever pray for something and… nothing happens?
You believed. You spoke. You tried.
But the situation didn’t move.
And now you’re left wondering… what went wrong?
Was it you? Was it timing? Or is something deeper going on?
Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.
“And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.”
Matthew 17:14–18 (KJV)
A father came… kneeling
This starts with humility.
He didn’t come demanding.
He came kneeling.
That posture says something.
He knew he needed help.
And he wasn’t hiding it.
Do you see that?
He brought his situation honestly.
Broken. urgent. real.
“A broken and a contrite heart… thou wilt not despise” (Psalm 51:17)
God responds to that kind of approach.
I brought him to thy disciples… and they could not cure him
This is where the tension shows up.
The disciples had been given authority before this.
They had healed. They had cast out devils.
But here… it didn’t work.
That’s uncomfortable.
Because it shows you something.
Previous success doesn’t guarantee present results.
So the question becomes… what was missing?
Do you notice the honesty here?
The father didn’t hide the failure.
He brought it straight to Jesus.
O faithless and perverse generation
Jesus responds strongly.
Not to shame… but to expose something.
Faithless.
Not a lack of effort.
A lack of trust.
Perverse.
Something out of alignment.
Twisted away from what it should be.
That tells you the issue wasn’t just technique.
It was something deeper.
Do you see the difference?
Bring him hither to me
Everything shifts right here.
“Bring him to me.”
Not try harder.
Not figure it out.
Bring the situation directly to Jesus.
That’s simple… but it’s not always what we do.
Sometimes we keep trying to fix it ourselves.
Or we get stuck analyzing why it didn’t work.
But Jesus redirects the focus.
To Himself.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
That invitation still stands.
Jesus rebuked the devil
He went straight to the root.
No delay.
No negotiation.
He addressed the cause.
That’s important.
Because earlier, the father described symptoms.
Falling into fire. Falling into water.
But Jesus dealt with what was behind it.
“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
Authority was exercised… and it responded.
He departed… and the child was cured
Immediate change.
From that very hour.
Not gradual.
Not partial.
Complete.
That shows you something.
Once the root was handled, the effects ended.
Do you see the connection?
Cause removed. condition healed.
What’s really happening here?
This moment exposes a gap.
The disciples had authority… but something wasn’t aligned.
Jesus points to faith.
Not just belief in general.
But active, present trust.
Dependence on Him.
Because authority without reliance turns into effort.
And effort isn’t what moves things.
Connection does.
Let’s sit in this honestly
Because this hits close.
You’ve tried.
Maybe you’ve prayed for something more than once.
And it didn’t move.
So now there’s doubt.
Not always loud… but it’s there.
Maybe you’ve started questioning if it even works.
Or if it works for you.
Is that what’s been building underneath?
What this is calling you into
This verse doesn’t push you to perform better.
It pulls you back to Jesus.
Bring it to Him.
Not just once.
Not casually.
But directly.
Honestly.
Fully.
Because when He steps in… things change.
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2)
He’s the source of it.
So instead of staying stuck in what didn’t work…
What would it look like for you to bring this straight back to Him again?
