You can be kind to people who treat you right. That’s easy.
But what about the ones who don’t? The ones who talk behind your back, ignore you, or go out of their way to make things harder?
And now you read this… and it feels almost unrealistic.
Love your enemies? Really?
Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.
“But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,”
— Luke 6:27 (KJV)
“Unto you which hear”
Jesus starts here for a reason.
Not everyone will receive this.
You can hear the words… but not actually take them in.
This teaching only lands if you’re willing to listen differently.
So the real question is… are you hearing this, or just reacting to it?
“Love your enemies” flips everything
This goes against your natural response.
Your instinct is to protect yourself.
To pull back.
To match their energy.
But Jesus says love them.
Not tolerate them. Not avoid them. Love them.
And this isn’t about feelings.
It’s about choosing their good, even when they haven’t chosen yours.
That’s a completely different way to live.
“Do good to them which hate you”
Now it gets practical.
Love isn’t just internal. It shows up in what you do.
This means you don’t just avoid retaliation.
You actively respond with good.
Do you see the difference?
You’re not just holding back anger.
You’re moving toward kindness.
This isn’t isolated teaching
Jesus expands this just a few verses later.
In Luke 6:35:
“But love ye your enemies, and do good… and ye shall be the children of the Highest…”
And over in Matthew 5:44:
“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you…”
Same message. Same direction.
This is what it looks like to reflect God’s character.
What’s happening in this moment
Jesus is speaking to a crowd.
Not just His disciples. A mix of people.
He’s describing the values of the kingdom.
And this is part of what sets it apart.
Anyone can love those who love them back.
But this… this reveals something deeper.
It shows a heart that isn’t controlled by how others behave.
Let’s talk about what’s really going on inside
This is where it gets uncomfortable.
Because when someone hurts you, love is the last thing you feel.
You feel frustration. Maybe anger. Maybe even resentment.
And if you’re honest, part of you feels justified in it.
Why should you be the one to respond with love?
Is that what’s going on for you?
Does it feel like this puts all the pressure on you?
You’re not wrong to feel the weight of that.
What this actually looks like in real life
This doesn’t mean you let people walk over you.
It doesn’t mean you stay in harmful situations.
But it does mean your response comes from a different place.
You refuse to return hate for hate.
You choose to speak well instead of tearing down.
You choose to act with kindness where you could easily be cold.
Not because they deserve it.
But because you’re living from something greater than the moment.
So when that person comes to mind again…
What would it look like for you to do good toward them instead of replaying what they did?
Bringing it together
Jesus isn’t asking for something small here.
He’s calling you into a completely different way of responding.
One that reflects how God has treated you.
Because He loved you when you were far from Him.
And now that same love is meant to flow through you.
So here’s the question that stays with you…
Are you letting their actions decide your response… or are you choosing to respond from what God has already shown you?
