You Think You Know Jesus… But Are You Living What He Said?
It’s easy to admire Jesus from a distance.
You read His words. You agree with them. You might even quote them. But then real life hits. Pressure. Stress. People testing your patience. Situations that don’t go your way.
And suddenly, what He said feels harder than it sounded.
That’s where this matters.
Jesus didn’t come just to be admired. He came to be followed. And the life lessons He taught weren’t soft suggestions. They were truth meant to reshape how you actually live.
So what does He really want you to know?
Let’s walk through it, slowly and honestly.
Following Him Will Cost You Something
This is where a lot of people get surprised.
We like the idea of Jesus making life better. But Jesus made it clear that following Him involves sacrifice.
“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23, KJV).
Deny yourself. That’s not popular. That means your comfort isn’t the priority anymore.
Take up your cross. That means there will be moments where obedience feels heavy.
Jesus isn’t hiding the cost. He’s preparing you for it.
Because a faith that costs nothing usually produces nothing.
What You Build Your Life On Matters More Than You Think
Jesus didn’t just teach truth. He warned about what happens when you ignore it.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them… is like a wise man, which built his house upon a rock” (Matthew 7:24, KJV).
Storms are coming either way.
The difference isn’t whether life gets hard. The difference is whether your life stands when it does.
A lot of people hear the Word. Few actually build on it.
That gap is where things fall apart.
Jesus is saying, don’t just listen. Build your life around what I said.
Your Heart Matters More Than Your Appearance
Let’s be honest. It’s easy to look right on the outside.
Say the right things. Act a certain way in front of people. Keep everything neat and controlled.
Jesus saw straight through that.
“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth… but their heart is far from me” (Matthew 15:8, KJV).
He’s not impressed with appearances.
He’s after your heart.
What do you think about when no one’s watching? What do you hold onto inside? What are you unwilling to surrender?
That’s where the real work happens.
A true walk with Jesus isn’t surface-level. It goes deep.
Forgiveness Isn’t Optional
This is one of those teachings people wish had a loophole.
It doesn’t.
“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14, KJV).
That’s straightforward.
But let’s be real. Forgiveness is hard. Especially when someone actually hurt you.
Jesus isn’t pretending that pain doesn’t exist. He’s showing you a way out of being trapped by it.
Holding onto bitterness feels justified in the moment. But it poisons you over time.
Forgiveness isn’t saying what they did was okay. It’s releasing it so it doesn’t control you anymore.
That’s freedom.
Worry Doesn’t Fix Anything
You ever catch yourself going in circles in your head?
Thinking about the same problem over and over, like somehow that will solve it?
Jesus addressed that directly.
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow… sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof” (Matthew 6:34, KJV).
He’s not saying ignore responsibility. He’s saying stop carrying tomorrow before it arrives.
Worry drains you without changing anything.
Trust, on the other hand, shifts your focus back to God.
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJV).
That’s the priority. Not anxiety. Not overthinking. God first.
Loving People Includes the Difficult Ones
It’s easy to love people who treat you well.
Jesus takes it further.
“But I say unto you, Love your enemies… do good to them that hate you” (Matthew 5:44, KJV).
Let that sit for a second.
Your enemies.
The ones who misunderstand you. Talk about you. Treat you unfairly.
Jesus says love them.
Not because they deserve it. But because that’s who you’re becoming.
This kind of love isn’t natural. It’s supernatural.
It reflects the heart of God.
Real Greatness Looks Different Than You Think
In the world, greatness is about status.
Recognition. Influence. Being seen.
Jesus flipped that completely.
“But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant” (Matthew 23:11, KJV).
Serving isn’t glamorous.
It’s often unseen. Unnoticed. Sometimes unappreciated.
But Jesus says that’s where true greatness is found.
He didn’t just teach it. He lived it.
“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister” (Mark 10:45, KJV).
If you want to follow Him, that mindset has to shift.
You Can’t Fake Fruit
Here’s where everything becomes visible.
Jesus said,
“A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit… Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:18–20, KJV).
Eventually, what’s inside shows up outside.
You can say the right things for a while. But your life will reveal what’s really going on.
Are you growing in patience? In love? In self-control?
Or are the same patterns repeating?
Jesus isn’t asking for perfection. He’s pointing to evidence of real change.
Fruit takes time. But it has to be there.
You Need the Holy Spirit to Live This Out
Here’s the part many people overlook.
Everything Jesus taught is impossible to live consistently in your own strength.
That’s why He promised help.
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost… he shall teach you all things” (John 14:26, KJV).
And then something happened that changed everything.
Pentecost.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:4, KJV).
This is the connection a lot of people miss.
Jesus didn’t just give instructions. He made a way for you to actually live them.
Through the Holy Spirit.
That same Spirit gives power, guidance, conviction, and strength.
Without Him, you’ll try to live these lessons and burn out.
With Him, something shifts inside you.
So What Does He Really Want You to Know?
Not just information.
Not just inspiration.
Transformation.
Jesus wants your life to actually change.
He wants your heart. Your choices. Your responses. Your direction.
And He didn’t leave you to figure it out alone.
He gave you truth. And He gave you His Spirit.
So here’s the real question.
Are you just learning about what Jesus said… or are you letting it shape how you live?
Because once you start living it, not perfectly, but honestly, everything begins to look different.
And that’s where it becomes real.
