John 9:1–7 Explained: You Want The Reason… But What If The Moment Is Bigger Than The Cause?

You’re looking at something in your life that just doesn’t make sense.

It’s been there a long time. Maybe always.

And the question keeps coming back…
Why is this here?

Was it something I did? Something I missed?

Or is there another reason I’m not seeing?

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

John 9:3–7 (KJV)
“Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.”

Start with what they asked.

The disciples see the man and go straight to cause.

Who sinned?

Him… or his parents?

They’re trying to explain the condition.

To make sense of it.

But Jesus shifts it completely.

“Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents…”

He removes the blame.

That alone changes how you see the situation.

But then He says something deeper.

“That the works of God should be made manifest in him.”

This isn’t about tracing back to a mistake.

It’s about what God is about to reveal.

Do you see the shift?

From “Why did this happen?”
To “What is God going to do here?”

That’s not where most people stay, is it?

Then Jesus acts.

He makes clay.

He puts it on the man’s eyes.

That’s unexpected.

The man is already blind.

Now his eyes are covered.

No improvement yet.

Then comes the instruction.

“Go, wash…”

That requires movement.

Before any change is visible.

Notice where the turning point is?

Not when the clay is applied.

Not when Jesus speaks about light.

But when the man responds.

“He went his way therefore…”

He obeyed the instruction.

Still blind.

Still without proof.

“And… came seeing.”

The result shows up after the response.

That’s consistent.

Is that what you expected?

Now step back into the moment.

This man was blind from birth.

This wasn’t a recent issue.

This was his entire life.

His identity.

Everyone around him knew him this way.

So when Jesus steps in, He’s not just addressing a condition.

He’s interrupting a lifelong reality.

And the method matters.

Clay. Washing. Obedience.

Not because the clay had power.

But because the man had to respond to the word given.

And the pool is called Siloam… “Sent.”

Even that points to something.

He responds to what is sent… and then he sees.

That shapes how you read the whole moment.

You see this pattern elsewhere.

In 2 Kings 5:10–14 (KJV), Naaman is told to wash in Jordan.

At first, he resists.

It doesn’t match his expectation.

But when he finally obeys… he’s cleansed.

And in John 11:43–44 (KJV), Lazarus is called out of the tomb.

The word comes first.

Then the response.

Then life.

And in Hebrews 11:8 (KJV)
“By faith Abraham, when he was called… obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.”

Movement without full understanding.

That’s the thread.

Now sit with this honestly.

You’ve probably spent time trying to figure out why something is the way it is.

Replaying it.

Tracing it back.

Looking for a reason that makes it easier to accept.

But what if that question is keeping you in place?

What if the focus on “why” is stopping you from seeing what God is doing right now?

Do you feel that tension?

Because Jesus didn’t give them a detailed explanation.

He gave direction.

And the man followed it.

Still in the same condition.

Still without visible change.

Until he acted.

So what does this look like for you?

It’s not ignoring your situation.

It’s not pretending it doesn’t matter.

It’s shifting your attention.

From trying to fully understand the cause…

To responding to what God is saying now.

Even if it feels simple.

Even if it doesn’t match what you expected.

So when you’re in that place again…

Where you’re searching for answers…

What would it look like to move on what He’s already told you?

Because the man didn’t get an explanation first.

He got an instruction.

And when he responded to it…

He saw.

So here’s the question that stays with you.

Are you still trying to explain your situation…
or are you ready to respond to what God has already said?

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
