John 16:13 Explained: You Want Guidance… But Are You Listening?

You’re trying to figure things out.

You want clarity. You want direction. You want to know you’re not just guessing your way through life.

But then you read something like this and wonder… why does it still feel unclear?
If the Spirit really guides into truth, why do you still feel unsure sometimes?

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
John 16:13 (KJV)

“The Spirit of truth… will guide you into all truth”

Notice the wording.

It doesn’t say push.
It doesn’t say force.
It says guide.

Guiding means you can follow… or not.

That already clears up one misunderstanding. The problem isn’t that the Spirit isn’t leading. The question is whether you’re actually following.

And “all truth” doesn’t mean you instantly understand everything at once. It means He leads you step by step into what is true.

Not just facts.
Not just information.
Truth that shapes how you think, decide, and live.

Do you see the difference?

“He shall not speak of himself”

This is where it gets really important.

The Spirit doesn’t bring random ideas. He doesn’t create a new message separate from God.

He speaks what He hears.

That means what He leads you into will always line up with what God has already said.

So if something feels “right” but contradicts Scripture… that’s not Him.

Simple, but easy to ignore.

“Whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak”

This shows you the source.

The Spirit isn’t independent from the Father and the Son. He reveals what comes from God.

Jesus said earlier:

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
John 17:17 (KJV)

So the Spirit guides you into truth… through the Word.

Not apart from it.

That’s where a lot of confusion comes from. People want guidance without Scripture. They want direction without truth already revealed.

That’s not how this works.

“He will shew you things to come”

This doesn’t mean you’ll know every future event.

It means the Spirit prepares you.

He shows what matters.
He warns.
He reminds.
He brings things to your attention at the right time.

Jesus said:

“But the Comforter… shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance.”
John 14:26 (KJV)

So sometimes the guidance you’re looking for isn’t new information.

It’s something you already read… coming back at the exact moment you need it.

Have you noticed that happening?

What’s actually going on in this moment

Be honest for a second.

You say you want guidance.
But how often are you sitting with the Word long enough to hear anything?

How often are you rushing decisions… then asking God to confirm what you already chose?

Is that what’s been happening for you?

Because the Spirit doesn’t compete with noise.

He leads.
He nudges.
He reminds.

But if everything else is louder… you won’t recognize it.

What this looks like in real life

This verse isn’t calling you to chase a feeling.

It’s calling you to stay close enough to truth that when He leads, you recognize it.

That means opening the Word when you don’t feel like it.
That means slowing down before making decisions.
That means checking what you’re hearing against Scripture, not your emotions.

So here’s the real question.

When that quiet conviction comes… that small correction… that reminder of what God already said…

What would it look like for you to actually follow it?

Bringing it together

The Spirit is not absent.

He is guiding.

He is speaking.

He is pointing you into truth that is already grounded in God’s Word.

But guidance only works if you respond.

So here’s what lingers.

Are you waiting for louder direction… or ignoring the guidance that’s already there?

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
