10 Bible Examples of Bad Mothers

I have a list of 10 mothers that did bad things. Lot’s wife, Jezebel, Athaliah, Herodias, The Woman in 1 Kings 3, and the Unfaithful wife in Proverbs, I would class as bad mothers, however, the others just did some bad things that caused drama in their families, but calling them bad mothers might be a bit harsh.

Bible Examples of Bad Mothers

  1. Eve (Genesis 3:6, 4:8)
    • Disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit.
    • Her son Cain killed his brother Abel.
    • Brought sin and death into the world.
  2. Sarah (Genesis 16:6, 21:10)
    • Mistreated her maidservant Hagar.
    • Insisted on casting out Hagar and her son Ishmael.
    • Actions led to strife and division in her family.
  3. Lot’s wife (Genesis 19:26)
    • Disobeyed God’s command not to look back at Sodom.
    • Turned into a pillar of salt.
    • Failed to protect and guide her family.
  4. Rebekah (Genesis 27)
    • Deceived her husband Isaac.
    • Favored Jacob over Esau, causing family conflict.
    • Contributed to Esau’s bitterness and Jacob’s exile.
  5. Jezebel (1 Kings 16:31, 21:25)
    • Led Israel into idolatry.
    • Murdered Naboth to acquire his vineyard.
    • Her actions brought divine judgment on her family.
  6. Athaliah (2 Kings 11:1)
    • Murdered her own grandchildren to secure power.
    • Led Judah into idolatry.
    • Her tyranny ended in her own death.
  7. Herodias (Mark 6:17-28)
    • Manipulated her daughter to ask for John the Baptist’s head.
    • Contributed to John’s unjust execution.
    • Demonstrated vindictiveness and cruelty.
  8. The mother of James and John (Matthew 20:20-21)
    • Sought privileged positions for her sons.
    • Demonstrated selfish ambition.
    • Caused discord among Jesus’ disciples.
  9. The woman in 1 Kings 3:19
    • Negligently caused the death of her own child.
    • Tried to claim another woman’s baby as her own.
    • Her actions exposed by King Solomon’s wisdom.
  10. The unfaithful wife in Proverbs 7
    • Led a young man into adultery.
    • Her actions are described as a path to Sheol.
    • Serves as a warning against infidelity and temptation.

5 Responsibilities of a Biblical Mother

  1. Teaching and Guiding Children
    • Proverbs 31:26: The virtuous woman teaches her children with wisdom and kindness.
    • 2 Timothy 1:5: Timothy’s faith was influenced by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice.
    • Proverbs 22:6: A mother is instructed to train up a child in the way he should go.
  2. Providing Care and Nurturing
    • 1 Kings 3:26: The true mother in Solomon’s judgement showed deep compassion and care for her child.
    • Proverbs 31:15: The virtuous woman rises early to provide food for her household.
    • Isaiah 66:13: God compares His comfort to that of a mother’s comfort to her child.
  3. Setting a Godly Example
    • Proverbs 31:30: A woman that fears the LORD is praised, setting a spiritual example for her children.
    • Luke 2:51: Mary, mother of Jesus, kept all things in her heart, showing reflection and understanding.
    • 1 Samuel 1:27-28: Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Lord, demonstrating commitment to God’s will.
  1. Demonstrating Unconditional Love
    • Ruth 1:16-17: Naomi’s relationship with her daughter-in-law Ruth shows a motherly bond of steadfast love.
    • John 19:25-27: Mary stood by Jesus at the cross, showing unwavering love even in the face of great sorrow.
    • 1 Kings 3:26: The real mother in Solomon’s judgement was willing to give up her child to save its life.
  2. Praying for and Blessing Children
    • 1 Samuel 1:27: Hannah prayed earnestly for a child and dedicated Samuel to the Lord once he was born.
    • Genesis 27:28: Rebekah’s role in ensuring Jacob received Isaac’s blessing, foreseeing God’s plan for her son.
    • Luke 1:46-55: Mary’s Magnificat shows her deep spirituality, serving as a prayerful example for her child, Jesus.
