Be still and know that I am God is closely related to another scripture that says, Be still and see the salvation of God, and the statement opens the door to an amazing Bible study.
In this guide, you will discover: What be still and know that I am God means… You will find beautiful be still and know that I am God’s songs, lyrics, meditations, affirmations, and more.
We will examine the phrase in context within the whole chapter of Psalm 46 and in so doing stumble upon some very significant Bible truths and comparisons for our Christian walk in the New Testament.
Hold onto your hats. This is going to packed full of enlightening fun…
Bible Verse Be Still and Know That I Am God KJV
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10)
Be Still and Know That I Am God Meaning
Be still and know that I am God basically means stop running around like a chook with its head cut off and watch God with all of His mighty power will fight and win for you…
The following scripture when the children of Israel were standing before the Red Sea with the Egyptians fast closing in reveals exactly what standing still and know that I am God means…
And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. (Exodus 14:14-15)
Yes… the children of Israel were running around like chooks with their heads cut off… What are we going to do? We’re doomed, we’re doomed? It isn’t fair? We want to go back! Cry… sob… complain… and complain some more. Blame someone else… blame Moses… blame God!
Stand still means to stop fretting, the Lord will fight for you. Hold your peace… again stop fretting… and see the salvation of God… and know… that I am God!
Stand still means to: present yourselves, stand fast, take a stand, to stand with someone.
To stand still is more than sitting back in your banana chair sipping on a latte while God does everything for you…
It is standing with God. Remember they wanted to go back to Egypt. No… stay with your God… stand fast… stand with your God and watch Him fight for you. Standing still is standing at God’s side in battle.
The very next Bible verse in the above story says… Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward.
Yes… they were not stationary, they moved forward towards the Red Sea BEFORE it was parted, and as they obeyed God, as they walked forward, he made a way for them, he parted the Red Sea.
Standing still and seeing the salvation of the Lord required them to walk forward (walk in faith and not by sight), by sight they could only comprehend an uncrossable sea in front of them blocking their path and a massive army behind them, by sight they could only see that they were trapped…
But by faith, they were told to walk forward to the uncrossable sea and watch the salvation of God and he parted the Red Sea providing a way for them to cross the uncrossable.
Standing still and seeing the salvation of the Lord required them to walk through the Red Sea (the obstacle that was in their way), and afterward… they could look behind and see their enemies washed away.
God fights for us… walk by faith with him… stand with him… and the day soon comes when you realize He has been fighting for you… you will look back and see the victory has been won. You will never win a battle by fleeing back to the world.
Oh, what a victory… We still sing about it today…
I Will Sing Unto The Lord For He Has Triumphed Gloriously The Horse and Rider Thrown into The Sea
Let’s Take a Look at The Entire Chapter To See This Verse in Context and We’ll Discover Some Fascinating Stuff…
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
- So God Himself… is our refuge (shelter from storm, danger or falsehood)
- God Himself… is our strength
- God Himself… is a very present help in trouble.
Present means: to be found, come forth. God can be found for help in times of trouble. God will come forth and help in times of trouble.
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. (Psalm 46:2-3)
So… Because God is our refuge, strength and is very present to help in trouble, therefore we will not fear!
- We will not fear though the earth be removed
- We will not fear though the mountains are carried into the midst of the sea
- We will not fear though the waters of the sea roar and be troubled
- We will not fear though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof
There is a River Joy
There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. (Psalm 46:4-5)
I find these two verses amazing…
- A river
- The streams whereof shall make glad the city of God
- The holy place of the tabernacles of the Most-High is in the midst of her
- She shall not be moved
In New Testament times I believe the river is the Holy Ghost.
He that believes on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (John 7:38)
The streams whereof (of the Holy Ghost) shall make glad the city of God.
But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels. (Heb 12:22)
The holy place of the tabernacles of the Most-High in the midst of her.
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest (holy place) by the blood of Jesus. (Heb 10:19)
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (1 Cor 6:19)
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. (John 14:23)
She shall not be moved
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18)
Don’t you love how everything all dovetails together? How good is God?
Rivers of Joy Make Me So Happy Song
The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He makes wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and cuts the spear in sunder; he burns the chariot in the fire. (Psalm 46:6-9)
How powerful is God? Why do we worry?
The heathen raged (growl, roar, murmur, boisterous, to be in a stir, to be in a commotion) and the kingdoms were moved. (Psalm 46:6)
Sounds exactly like the times we are living in now doesn’t it? Talk about nothing new under the sun!
God utters his voice and the earth melted.
How Powerful is The Voice of God?
And of course… Jesus is the word (voice of God) made flesh.
I also can’t help but think of the sound (voice) of the Holy Ghost. If the Holy Ghost can be called God as Jesus can be called God and the Father can be called God… Then the voice of the Holy Ghost = the voice of God!
The wind (Spirit) blows (breathes) where it listeth (Chooses), and thou hearest the sound (voice) thereof, but canst not tell whence it comes, and whither it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8)
The word wind is the same Greek word translated as Spirit later in the verse and is overwhelming translated most of the time elsewhere in scripture as Spirit, Spirit of the Lord, Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit, etc.
The Greek word sound has been translated 131 times (the vast majority) elsewhere as voice
So… the Holy Spirit breathes where it chooses and you hear the voice thereof… so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Pretty cool – hey!
And The Lord Utters His Voice…
The Lord of Hosts is WITH us and the God of Jacob is our refuge (ever-present in a time of trouble)…
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Heb 13:5)
Come, behold the works of the LORD – is another way of saying, Stand still and know that I am God, or stand still and see the salvation of God.
- He causes the enemies to become desolate
- He makes wars to cease unto the end of the earth
- He breaks the bow
- He cuts the spear in sunder
- He burns the chariot in the fire.
And because of our all-powerful and might God who is on our side and fights for us against all of our enemies we can take hold of the Bible verse that says – Be still and know that I am God…
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. (Psalm 46:10-11)

I love the unexpected surprises I find when exploring the wonders of scriptures. Things I have no idea about when I sit down and write and then KAPOW… the Bible takes me down a path of hidden treasures that blow my mind.
Read the entire chapter 0f Psalm 37 in the light of what we have covered above and watch yourself going… Wow!
[[A Psalm of David.]] Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming. The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.
The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off. The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.
The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him. The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged. Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.
Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off. But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.
