Let me say something that might hit a little uncomfortable at first.
We’ve learned how to gather… but have we forgotten how to wait?
We know how to preach, organize, post, stream, and build. But when you read the early church, it wasn’t strategy that changed the world. It wasn’t structure. It wasn’t talent.
It was power.
Not human effort dressed up in church language. Real power. Power from on high.
And if we’re honest, a lot of what we call “church life” today can function without it.
That right there should make us pause.
Because if the first disciples were told not to move without it… why do we think we can?
Let’s walk through this slowly, because this isn’t just a topic. This is something that changes how you live, pray, and walk with God every single day.
What Jesus Actually Commanded Before Ministry Began
Right before Jesus ascended, He gave instructions that seem simple, but they carry serious weight.
In the book of Luke, He told His disciples to stay in Jerusalem and wait until they were “endued with power from on high.”
Think about that for a second.
These were not unbelievers. These were men who had walked with Him, heard Him teach, watched miracles, and even participated in ministry.
And yet, Jesus still said… don’t go yet.
Why?
Because being around Jesus is not the same as being empowered by His Spirit.
That changes how you see everything.
We tend to think knowledge equals readiness. But Jesus made it clear that knowledge without power is not enough.
They needed something more. Something internal. Something that would not just guide them, but enable them.
The Promise Was Never Optional
Now move over to the book of Acts.
Jesus said, “You shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me…”
Notice the order.
Not preach first. Not build first. Not go viral first.
Receive power… then witness.
We’ve flipped that in a lot of places.
We try to be witnesses without the power that actually makes the witness effective.
And then we wonder why things feel dry, forced, or inconsistent.
The early church did not move until something happened inside them.
And when it did, everything changed.
Pentecost Was Not Just a Moment, It Was a Pattern
When the day of Pentecost came, something happened that was impossible to ignore.
In the book of Acts 2, the Spirit of God filled the believers, and they began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
This wasn’t hype. This wasn’t emotion for the sake of it.
This was evidence that something from heaven had come into ordinary people.
And what happened next?
Boldness.
Clarity.
Conviction.
People who were once afraid stood up and spoke openly. Not because they trained harder, but because something had changed within them.
That’s the difference power makes.
It turns hesitation into boldness.
It turns fear into clarity.
It turns ordinary people into living witnesses.
Why the Church Still Needs This Today
Here’s the real question.
Was that just for them… or is that for us?
If the assignment hasn’t changed, why would the power change?
The world still needs truth. People still need healing. Lives still need to be turned around.
And let’s be honest, human effort alone cannot produce spiritual results.
You can have the best message and still lack impact if the power behind it is missing.
This is not about being dramatic. It’s about being effective.
The early church didn’t rely on personality. They relied on the Spirit.
And that’s the part many people try to replace.
We lean on systems. We lean on talent. We lean on consistency.
But without power from on high, something is always missing.
The Difference Between Effort and Empowerment
Have you ever tried to push something forward and it just feels heavy?
Like you’re doing everything right, but nothing is really breaking through?
That’s often the difference between effort and empowerment.
Effort says, “Try harder.”
Empowerment says, “Receive first.”
The Spirit of God does not just help you do things. He changes how things flow through you.
Words carry weight.
Prayer carries authority.
Decisions carry clarity.
You’re not forcing things anymore. You’re moving with something greater than yourself.
That’s what the early believers walked in.
And it wasn’t reserved for a special few.
It was promised to all.
Power Is Personal Before It Is Public
Here’s something many people miss.
Power from on high is not just for preaching or ministry moments.
It’s for your daily walk.
Before Peter stood up in front of thousands, something happened in him personally.
Before boldness showed up publicly, there was a filling privately.
We often chase visible results without tending to the hidden source.
But God works from the inside out.
That means your prayer life matters.
Your time with God matters.
Your sensitivity to His Spirit matters.
Because that’s where the power flows from.
Not performance. Relationship.
What It Actually Means to Wait
Now let’s talk about something people don’t like.
Waiting.
When Jesus told them to wait, He wasn’t telling them to sit around doing nothing.
They were in expectation. In prayer. In unity.
Waiting in Scripture is not passive. It’s active trust.
It’s positioning yourself for what God has promised.
And this is where a lot of people quit too early.
They want the power, but they don’t want the process.
They want the outcome, but not the surrender.
But God does not pour new wine into a closed vessel.
There has to be openness. Hunger. Willingness.
That’s what waiting produces.
The Holy Spirit Is Not a Bonus, He Is Essential
Some treat the Holy Spirit like an optional add-on.
Like something for certain believers, or certain moments.
But when you read Scripture, He is central.
He teaches.
He leads.
He convicts.
He comforts.
He empowers.
Take Him out, and you’re left with a form… without the life inside it.
And that’s not what Jesus came to establish.
He didn’t come to build a system.
He came to bring life.
And that life flows through His Spirit.
Why Many Miss It
Let’s be honest about this.
Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of power from on high.
Not because it’s unclear, but because it’s uncontrollable.
You can manage a system.
You can organize a schedule.
But you can’t control the Spirit of God.
And that requires trust.
It requires surrender.
It requires letting go of the need to always be in control.
That’s where many hesitate.
But that’s also where the breakthrough is.
The Invitation Still Stands
Here’s the good news.
What God did then, He is still willing to do now.
The promise did not expire.
The need did not disappear.
And the invitation has not been withdrawn.
If anything, the times we’re living in make it even more clear.
We don’t need more noise.
We need power.
Real power.
The kind that transforms lives from the inside out.
The kind that gives you boldness when you would normally shrink back.
The kind that brings peace when everything around you is uncertain.
The kind that makes your life a witness without you forcing it.
Final Thought: Don’t Settle for Less
You can go through the motions without power.
You can build something that looks right on the outside.
But deep down, you’ll know when something is missing.
And once you see it in Scripture, you can’t unsee it.
Jesus told them to wait for a reason.
Because what was coming would change everything.
And it still does.
So don’t settle for a version of faith that runs on effort alone.
Don’t talk yourself out of what God has already promised.
Lean in.
Stay open.
Ask God for what He said He would give.
Because power from on high is not just a past event.
It’s a present reality.
And the church still needs it.
Call to Action: The Question That Demands an AnswerIn Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do? And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed? If you’re ready to take that step, or you want to learn more about what it means to be born again of water and Spirit, visit: Come, and let the Spirit make you new. |
