Acts 3:1–10 Explained: You’re Expecting One Thing… But What If God Is Doing Something Else?

You’ve been asking for help.

Not everything. Just something to get through.

A little relief. A small answer.

And you’ve gotten used to asking that way.

So when God moves, you’re still looking for the same kind of answer.

And you might miss what He’s actually doing.

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

Acts 3:6–8 (KJV)
“Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.”

Start with the expectation.

This man is at the gate every day.

Asking for alms.

That’s all he knows.

That’s all he expects.

Relief, not transformation.

Do you see that?

Then Peter speaks.

“Silver and gold have I none…”

That sounds like a no.

Like he’s about to walk past him.

“But such as I have give I thee…”

Now everything shifts.

Peter isn’t meeting the expectation.

He’s bringing something different.

“In the name of Jesus Christ… rise up and walk.”

That’s not what the man asked for.

That’s more than he expected.

And it requires a response.

Notice what happens next.

“He took him by the right hand…”

There’s action here.

Not just words.

And then…

“Immediately his feet… received strength.”

But don’t miss the order.

The command comes first.

Then the movement.

Then the strength.

Do you see where this starts?

“And he leaping up stood, and walked…”

The result follows the response.

Not the other way around.

That’s not how most people think it works, is it?

Now look at the setting.

This is the temple gate called Beautiful.

A place of worship.

People going in to pray.

And right there at the entrance is a man who can’t enter the same way.

He’s carried there daily.

That means this has been his life.

Not a moment.

A pattern.

Everyone recognizes him.

He’s part of the scene.

That matters.

Because when change comes, it’s visible.

It disrupts what people are used to seeing.

And that’s exactly what happens.

You see this same pattern in other places.

In Luke 5:24–25 (KJV)
“I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
And immediately he rose up before them…”

Command first.

Response follows.

Then visible change.

And in James 2:18 (KJV)
“Show me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”

Faith moves.

It doesn’t wait for proof.

And in Mark 3:5 (KJV)
“Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored…”

Again.

Instruction.

Action.

Then restoration.

Now be honest for a moment.

You might be asking God for something small.

Just enough to get by.

Because that’s what you’ve always asked for.

That’s what feels realistic.

But what if that expectation is limiting how you respond?

Is that what’s been happening?

Have you been so focused on one kind of answer… that you’re not ready for something greater?

Because this man didn’t initiate the miracle.

He didn’t ask for healing.

But when the word came… he responded.

Even though it was unfamiliar.

Even though it was bigger than what he expected.

That’s where the shift happened.

So what does this look like for you?

It’s not wrong to ask for help.

But it’s being open to how God answers.

It’s responding when He speaks… even if it’s not what you were expecting.

Even if it calls you to step into something you’ve never done before.

So when you’re in that moment again…

Asking for one thing…

What would it look like for you to respond to what He actually says?

Because the man expected coins.

But he received strength.

And it all started when he responded to the word given.

So here’s the question that stays with you.

Are you holding onto the answer you expected…
or are you ready to respond to the one God is giving?

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
