You ever had that moment where something felt right, but later you realized it wasn’t?
At first it seemed harmless. Just a small thing.
Then over time, it started to affect more than you expected.
So when Scripture says God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all, it pushes you to ask something honest.
What does that actually mean for how you see Him… and how you live?
Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.
The Verse
“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
1 John 1:5 (KJV)
Breaking It Down
“ This then is the message which we have heard of him”
This is not John’s opinion.
This is what was received from Jesus and passed on.
So what you’re about to read is not an idea people came up with.
It’s a revealed truth.
“God is light”
Not just that He gives light.
He is light.
Light reveals. Light exposes. Light shows things as they really are.
So God is not hidden. Not confusing. Not mixed.
He is pure truth.
He makes things clear.
Do you notice how that challenges anything that lives in the shadows?
“And in him is no darkness at all”
This is absolute.
No darkness.
Not a little. Not occasionally. Not in certain moments.
None.
That means no deception. No hidden wrong. No contradiction.
There is nothing in God that needs to be covered or corrected.
That’s not how anything else in your experience works, is it?
The Context
John is writing to believers about real fellowship with God.
Right after this verse, he says:
“If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie…”
1 John 1:6 (KJV)
So this statement about God being light sets the standard.
If God is completely light, then walking with Him means stepping into that light.
This is not just about who God is.
It’s about how you relate to Him.
Scripture Connections
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”
Psalm 27:1 (KJV)
God’s light brings clarity and security.
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
Psalm 119:130 (KJV)
His word shines into what you don’t understand.
“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
John 8:12 (KJV)
Jesus doesn’t just reveal light.
He leads you out of darkness.
The Internal Struggle
Here’s where it gets real.
You know God is light.
But there are areas of your life you’d rather keep hidden.
Things you don’t fully want exposed.
Thoughts. Habits. Patterns.
So there’s a quiet tension.
You want closeness with God.
But you’re not always comfortable with everything being brought into the light.
Is that what’s happening for you?
Do you feel that pull between wanting Him and wanting to keep certain things covered?
What This Calls You Into
This verse calls you into honesty.
Not perfection.
Light doesn’t demand you’ve already fixed everything.
It reveals so things can be dealt with.
God is not inviting you into exposure to shame you.
He’s inviting you into light so you can actually be free.
Because what stays hidden stays stuck.
But what comes into the light can change.
So walking with Him means choosing truth over hiding.
Even when it’s uncomfortable.
What would it look like for you to bring one area into the light instead of keeping it in the dark?
Closing Thought
God is not partly light.
He is fully light.
No darkness. No mixture. No hidden corners.
That means when you come to Him, you’re stepping into truth.
Not confusion. Not deception.
So here’s the question that stays with you.
Are you trying to stay close to God while holding onto darkness, or are you willing to step fully into the light He already is?
