Matthew 15:21–28 Explained: What Do You Do When It Feels Like God Is Saying No?

You ever pray about something that really matters… and it feels like nothing is happening?

No response. No change. Just silence.

And if you’re honest, it starts to feel personal.

Like maybe this one isn’t for you.

So what do you do when it feels like God is holding back?

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

“Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.
And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.”
Matthew 15:21–28 (KJV)

She cried out for mercy

This started with desperation.

Not a casual request. Not a polite question.

She cried out.

Her daughter was tormented, and she refused to stay quiet about it.

Do you see that?

This wasn’t about appearances. It was about need.

“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.” (Psalm 34:17)

There’s something real about a cry that comes from the heart.

He answered her not a word

This is the part that throws people.

Silence.

No response at all.

Not even a “wait.”

Just… nothing.

Have you ever been there?

You pray, and it feels like it hits a wall.

No answer. No movement.

But notice something.

His silence wasn’t rejection.

It was part of the moment.

That’s not what it feels like though, is it?

The disciples tried to send her away

Now pressure shows up.

Not just silence, but resistance.

People around her wanted her gone.

“Send her away.”

That’s what they said.

So now she’s dealing with silence from Jesus and rejection from others.

That’s a lot.

And it raises a question… what do you do when everything around you says stop?

I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of Israel

This sounds like a closed door.

A clear boundary.

“I’m not sent to you.”

At least, that’s how it sounds on the surface.

But she didn’t walk away.

She didn’t argue either.

She moved closer.

That’s important.

Because sometimes what looks like a barrier is actually revealing what’s inside you.

Do you stop… or do you press in?

She worshipped and said, Lord, help me

She got simpler.

No long speech.

No explanation.

Just… “Lord, help me.”

That’s it.

And she worshipped.

Even when it didn’t look like things were going her way.

“Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

She stayed connected, even in the tension.

It is not meet… to cast it to dogs

This is the hardest line.

It sounds harsh.

Like she’s being pushed away again.

But watch her response.

She didn’t get offended.

She didn’t pull back.

She agreed.

“Truth, Lord.”

She didn’t fight the statement.

She leaned into it.

That’s unexpected, isn’t it?

Yet the dogs eat of the crumbs

This is where everything turns.

She saw something.

Even in what sounded like rejection, she saw access.

Even a crumb from Him was enough.

That’s faith.

Not demanding a full explanation.

Not insisting on a certain position.

Just believing… whatever comes from Him is enough.

Do you see how simple that is?

Great is thy faith

Jesus finally speaks directly to her.

And what does He point out?

Her persistence.

Her response.

Her refusal to walk away.

“Great is thy faith.”

Not because she had perfect theology.

But because she stayed.

“Men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1)

She didn’t faint.

Her daughter was made whole

The breakthrough came.

And it came completely.

From that very hour.

Distance didn’t matter.

Time didn’t delay it.

Once the moment came… it happened.

That shows you something.

Nothing was actually blocking Jesus.

What’s really happening here?

This wasn’t Jesus trying to keep her out.

It was exposing a kind of faith that doesn’t quit.

Faith that doesn’t get offended.

Faith that doesn’t collapse under silence.

Faith that sees opportunity where others see rejection.

That’s rare.

But it’s real.

Let’s sit in this honestly

Because this is where it hits.

You’ve prayed.

You’ve believed.

And maybe it hasn’t happened yet.

So the thought creeps in… maybe this one isn’t for me.

Maybe God is silent because He’s saying no.

But what if silence isn’t the end?

What if resistance isn’t rejection?

Have you been interpreting delay as denial?

What this is calling you into

This verse isn’t telling you to beg harder.

It’s showing you how to stay.

Stay close.

Stay humble.

Stay connected.

Even when it feels like nothing is happening.

Even when it’s uncomfortable.

Even when it doesn’t make sense.

Because she didn’t leave… and everything changed.

“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)” (Hebrews 10:23)

That’s still true.

So when it comes down to it…

Are you pulling back because it’s hard… or are you willing to stay right there until the answer comes?

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
