You want to get it right with God.
So when something feels off, your instinct is to do more.
Pray more.
Fix more.
Try harder.
It feels responsible.
But then you read this verse… and it challenges that instinct.
Because it sounds like God is not impressed with more effort.
So what if the issue isn’t that you’re doing too little…
but that you’re doing the wrong thing instead?
Have you ever tried to make up for something… instead of just facing it?
Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.
“And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”
1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV)
Read that slowly.
There’s a correction happening here.
“Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices…”
That sounds like a good thing.
Because sacrifices were commanded by God.
They were part of worship.
So the issue isn’t that sacrifice is bad.
It’s that it’s being used the wrong way.
Saul thought he was doing something good.
He kept part of what God told him to destroy…
and planned to offer it as sacrifice.
That sounds spiritual, doesn’t it?
But it wasn’t obedience.
So what happens when you try to replace obedience with something that looks spiritual?
“as in obeying the voice of the LORD?”
Now the comparison is clear.
God is not weighing two equal options.
He’s exposing a priority.
His voice matters more than your offering.
More than your effort.
More than what you think is a good idea.
So when you already know what God has said…
why is it so tempting to adjust it?
To soften it.
Delay it.
Rework it?
“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…”
Not equal.
Better.
That’s direct.
Because sacrifice can be visible.
Impressive.
Measurable.
But obedience is often quiet.
Personal.
Costly in a different way.
So which one do you tend to lean toward?
The one people can see… or the one that actually requires surrender?
This connects with:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
John 14:15 (KJV)
Love shows up in obedience.
Not substitution.
“and to hearken than the fat of rams.”
“Hearken” means more than hearing.
It means listening with the intent to respond.
Not just processing information.
But aligning with it.
So this is not just about action.
It’s about posture.
Are you listening to God… or just aware of what He said?
Because there’s a difference.
Jesus says:
“Take heed therefore how ye hear…”
Luke 8:18 (KJV)
Not just what you hear.
How you hear it.
Now look at what’s happening.
God told Saul clearly what to do.
Destroy everything.
No exceptions.
But Saul didn’t fully obey.
He kept the best parts.
Then tried to present it as worship.
When Samuel confronts him, Saul says he did obey.
That’s the danger.
Partial obedience… presented as full obedience.
So is there any area where you’ve obeyed enough to feel okay… but not completely?
This thread runs through Scripture.
“To obey is better than sacrifice.”
That idea shows up again here:
“For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice…”
Hosea 6:6 (KJV)
God is after the heart behind the action.
Not just the action itself.
And Jesus repeats this:
“These ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”
Matthew 23:23 (KJV)
They were doing religious things.
But missing what mattered most.
Just like Saul.
So what is this really exposing inside you?
It’s that instinct to compensate.
To do something extra… instead of dealing with what God actually said.
You feel the tension.
You know something is off.
But instead of facing it directly…
You redirect.
You stay busy.
You do good things.
You tell yourself it balances out.
But deep down… you know it doesn’t.
Does that sound familiar?
Have you been trying to cover disobedience with activity?
This verse isn’t telling you to do more.
It’s calling you back to something simpler.
Listen.
And respond.
Not creatively.
Not selectively.
Directly.
Obedience is not about adding.
It’s about aligning.
Even when it costs something.
Even when it doesn’t feel convenient.
Even when no one sees it.
This lines up with this:
“To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”
James 4:17 (KJV)
That’s clear.
Because delay and substitution both miss the point.
So what would it look like for you to go back to the last thing God showed you…
and actually do it?
God is not asking for more effort.
He’s asking for real response.
Because obedience is where relationship becomes real.
So be honest with yourself…
Are you obeying what God said… or replacing it with something else?
