You’ve probably heard this before.
“If two of you agree… it shall be done.”
So naturally, you think…
Okay. That sounds simple.
Get someone to agree with me. Pray together. Done.
But then you try it.
You pray with someone.
You both believe.
And… nothing happens.
So now you’re wondering…
Did we do it wrong?
Or is there something in this verse we’re missing?
Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.
READ THE VERSE (KJV)
“Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.”
Matthew 18:19 (KJV)
SECTION: WHAT DOES “AGREE” MEAN?
This isn’t just saying the same words together.
It’s deeper than that.
The word “agree” here carries the idea of being in harmony.
Like instruments playing the same note.
Not just outward agreement… but inward alignment.
Think about it like this.
You can say you agree with someone… but inside, you’re unsure.
Doubting. Hesitating. Not fully aligned.
That’s not real agreement.
The Bible says:
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”
Amos 3:3 (KJV)
Agreement isn’t just verbal.
It’s shared direction. Shared understanding.
So here’s the question.
Are you just saying the same thing… or are you actually aligned?
SECTION: WHAT IS REALLY BEING SAID HERE?
This verse isn’t a blank check for anything you ask.
It’s about agreement in the will of God.
That’s the part most people skip.
Because it’s easy to agree with someone’s desire.
It’s harder to align with what God actually wants.
And when those don’t match… things feel off.
The Bible says:
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:”
1 John 5:14 (KJV)
That changes how you read this verse.
Agreement isn’t just between people.
It’s between people… and God.
So the real question is…
Are you agreeing with each other… or with God?
SECTION: CONTEXT CHANGES EVERYTHING
This verse sits inside a passage about relationships.
Specifically… dealing with conflict.
Correction. Forgiveness. Restoration.
Just before this, Jesus talks about resolving issues between people.
After this, He talks about forgiveness.
Then right after, He gives the example of forgiving again and again.
So this isn’t random.
This is about unity.
Real unity.
Not forced.
Not surface-level.
But restored, honest relationship.
That’s the environment where this kind of agreement happens.
SECTION: THE CONNECTION MOST PEOPLE MISS
Right after this verse, Jesus says:
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Matthew 18:20 (KJV)
That’s the key.
“In my name.”
Not just gathering.
Not just agreeing.
But coming together under His authority.
Aligned with who He is.
That’s what makes the difference.
SECTION: WHERE THIS SHOWS UP IN REAL LIFE (BIBLE STORIES)
Look at the early church for a second.
They didn’t just pray together.
They were aligned.
“And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together…”
Acts 4:31 (KJV)
They weren’t just asking for anything.
They were asking for boldness to speak God’s word.
They were aligned with His purpose.
And things moved.
So ask yourself.
Are your prayers aligned with God’s purpose… or just your preference?
Look at Paul and Silas.
They were in prison.
Beaten. Locked up.
But they prayed together.
And something happened.
“And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God…”
Acts 16:25 (KJV)
They weren’t trying to escape.
They were focused on God… even in that moment.
And then the prison doors opened.
But the breakthrough came out of alignment… not desperation.
So here’s the question.
When you pray with someone… what are you actually focused on?
SECTION: LET’S BE HONEST
This is where it gets tricky.
Because it’s easy to think agreement guarantees results.
So when nothing happens…
You start questioning everything.
Your faith.
Your prayer.
Your relationship with God.
But sometimes… it’s not about failure.
It’s about misalignment.
The Bible says:
“Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss…”
James 4:3 (KJV)
That’s hard to hear.
But it’s honest.
SECTION: WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGES WHEN YOU LIVE THIS
This verse shifts you from trying to get God to agree with you…
to aligning yourself with what God is already doing.
Before this… prayer can feel like convincing God.
Trying to get Him to move your way.
After this… prayer becomes alignment.
Listening.
Adjusting.
Coming into agreement with Him… together.
That changes how you pray with others.
You’re not just saying the same request.
You’re seeking the same direction.
The Bible says:
“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)
Not forcing.
Being directed.
That’s the difference.
OUTRO (NO PRAYER)
This verse isn’t about getting guaranteed results by numbers.
It’s about real agreement.
With each other.
And with God.
Because when that alignment is there…
things shift.
Not always the way you expect.
But always in the direction God is leading.
So next time you pray with someone…
don’t just focus on agreeing.
Focus on aligning.
And watch what changes.
