You believe in Jesus.
At least… you think you do.
But sometimes it still feels uncertain.
Like you’re trying to follow Him…
but not fully sure where you stand.
Are you actually a child of God?
Or are you still on the outside, trying to get in?
Because this verse sounds clear.
But your experience doesn’t always match it.
So what does it really mean to “become” a son of God?
Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.
READ THE VERSE (KJV)
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
John 1:12 (KJV)
SECTION: WHAT DOES “RECEIVED HIM” MEAN?
Receiving isn’t just knowing about Jesus.
It’s accepting Him personally.
Trusting Him.
Letting go of trying to build your own way… and actually taking what He offers.
Think about it like this.
If someone offers you a gift… it’s not yours until you receive it.
It can be right in front of you… but still not yours.
“He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”
John 1:11 (KJV)
So this isn’t about information.
It’s about response.
Here’s the question.
Have you just heard about Him… or have you actually received Him?
SECTION: WHAT IS REALLY BEING SAID HERE?
This verse is showing a turning point.
You move from outside… to inside.
From not belonging… to belonging.
But notice this word.
“Power.”
That means authority. Right. Permission.
You’re not forcing your way into being God’s child.
You’re being given the right to become one.
And that can feel strange.
Because internally, you might still feel the same.
Still dealing with the same thoughts. Same patterns.
But something has changed at a deeper level.
“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”
Galatians 3:26 (KJV)
So the question isn’t whether you feel it yet.
It’s whether you believe what God said happened.
SECTION: CONTEXT CHANGES EVERYTHING
This comes right after something important.
“He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”
John 1:11 (KJV)
Not everyone accepted Him.
But those who did…
something shifted.
They were given something others weren’t.
The right to become sons of God.
So this verse is about response.
Not everyone receives.
But those who do… are changed in position immediately.
SECTION: THE CONNECTION MOST PEOPLE MISS
This ties into something God promised long before.
“And I will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters…”
2 Corinthians 6:18 (KJV)
This was always the plan.
Not just to forgive.
But to bring you into relationship.
So John 1:12 isn’t random.
It’s the doorway into what God has been moving toward all along.
SECTION: WHERE THIS SHOWS UP IN REAL LIFE (BIBLE STORIES)
Look at Zacchaeus for a second.
He was an outsider.
Rejected. Looked down on.
But when he encountered Jesus… he responded.
“Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor…”
Luke 19:8 (KJV)
And Jesus said:
“This day is salvation come to this house…”
Luke 19:9 (KJV)
Everything changed when he received Him.
So ask yourself.
Have you truly responded… or just observed from a distance?
Look at The Prodigal Son.
He came back expecting to earn his way in.
But the father didn’t treat him like a servant.
“Bring forth the best robe…”
Luke 15:22 (KJV)
Why?
Because he was a son.
Not becoming one slowly.
Already one… the moment he returned.
So here’s the question.
Are you trying to earn what’s already being offered?
SECTION: LET’S BE HONEST
This can feel hard to accept.
Because you still see your flaws.
Still see areas where you fall short.
And it makes you question if you really belong.
But listen.
“Being justified freely by his grace…”
Romans 3:24 (KJV)
Freely.
Not earned. Not built over time.
So the struggle you feel?
It doesn’t cancel what God has given.
It just means you’re still learning to live in it.
SECTION: WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGES WHEN YOU LIVE THIS
Here’s the shift.
You move from trying to get accepted
to living from acceptance.
Before, everything feels uncertain.
Am I in?
Am I doing enough?
Am I close enough?
Now?
You start from something settled.
You’ve been given the right to belong.
“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God…”
Romans 8:17 (KJV)
That changes how you think.
You stop chasing approval…
and start living like someone who already has it.
Not perfectly.
But steadily.
OUTRO (NO PRAYER)
You don’t become a child of God by trying harder.
According to Scripture… it begins when you receive Him.
So the real question is…
have you just believed about Him…
or have you actually received Him?
Sit with that.
