Brethren, before there was light, before sound, before form or order – the Spirit of God was already there. The earth was without form and void, yet the Spirit moved upon the face of the waters. He hovered like a mighty eagle over its young, preparing the earth for life.
Genesis 1:2 is not the start of His presence; it is the revelation of His movement. When nothing made sense, when all was dark and silent, God’s Spirit was active. Do you see it? Before there was structure, there was Spirit. Before there was sight, there was breath.
By His Spirit He garnished the heavens (Job 26:13). Think of that. The same breath that hovered over the waters decorated the skies with stars. Every sunrise, every constellation, every galaxy – He hung them there.
When you look up at night and see those scattered jewels, remember: that’s His handiwork. The heavens aren’t random; they’re arranged. And if God’s Spirit can order the heavens, can He not order the chaos in your life?
By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth (Psalm 33:6). Word and Spirit together – always together. The Word spoke; the Spirit performed. That’s why creation sings in harmony. It’s also why a heart changed by the Word comes alive through the Spirit. Friends, the Word without the Spirit is sound without breath, but when the Spirit moves upon the Word, life bursts forth!
Thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host… and Thou preservest them all (Nehemiah 9:6). What a wonder! The Spirit not only created but sustains. He didn’t vanish after creation; He upholds it. Every beat of your heart, every breath you take – He preserves them all. The same Spirit who shaped the world keeps it spinning still.
Thou sendest forth Thy Spirit, they are created: and Thou renewest the face of the earth (Psalm 104:30). Every spring that breaks through the frost, every flower that blooms again, whispers this truth: the Spirit of God renews. He revives what was dying. He restores what seemed gone. O my soul, if the Spirit renews the earth, can He not renew you?
Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being His counsellor hath taught Him? (Isaiah 40:13). The answer is none. No one teaches Him. No one advises Him. He acts with perfect wisdom. We may not understand His methods, but His movements are never random. When the Spirit stirs, He knows what He’s doing – even when we don’t.
For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth (Colossians 1:16). The Spirit’s creative power is united with Christ. Christ the Word, the Spirit the Breath, and the Father the Will – they moved together. Creation was not a lonely act but a holy harmony. The Trinity sang creation into being.
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God (Hebrews 11:3). We weren’t there when He spoke light into darkness, but we believe because faith hears what eyes could never see. The Spirit framed the unseen, building reality from nothing but God’s command. If He can do that, surely He can frame your future too.
All things were made by Him… In Him was life (John 1:3–4). That life is the Spirit’s breath, the divine pulse in all creation. Every living thing carries the echo of that moment when the Spirit moved. Friends, we’re not accidents. We’re animated by the breath of God.
He hath made the earth by His power, He hath established the world by His wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by His discretion (Jeremiah 10:12). Creation was not only power – it was purpose. Every blade of grass, every mountain peak, every heartbeat was shaped by divine intelligence.
So hear this truth: The Spirit of God was no bystander at creation. He was the divine mover, the life-breather, the sustainer of all that is. From chaos to cosmos, His presence shaped the world. From emptiness to abundance, His breath gave life. And even now, He moves still – hovering over hearts, ready to bring order out of our confusion, light out of our darkness, and life out of what we thought was dead.
Will you let Him move upon the waters of your soul today?
