What Was Jesus Last Name – The Amazing Meaning Of Jesus Name

Did Jesus have a surname

The Name Above Every Name

Brethren, the name of Jesus is not ordinary. It’s not a label passed down by family, nor a cultural tag tied to a tribe or lineage. His name carries divine identity, eternal purpose, and heavenly power. When you say Jesus Christ, you’re not repeating a first and last name – you’re declaring who He is and what He came to do. You’re speaking the Gospel in two words.

His name divides light from darkness, truth from deception, and salvation from condemnation. Every demon trembles at that name. Every sickness bows before it. Every knee shall one day bend in surrender to it. Philippians 2:9-11 says, “God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.”

The name of Jesus reveals His mission – Yahweh saves. The title Christ declares His authority – the Anointed One. Together they proclaim: He is the Anointed Savior who redeems, heals, delivers, and reigns.

So today, we set aside the casual misuse of that holy name and return to reverence. We will see that Christ is not His surname – it is His seal of divine purpose. The name Jesus Christ is the Gospel itself, the living testimony that God became flesh to save us and fill us with His Spirit.

Praise be to God. Let’s walk through this truth together.

1. Christ Is NOT the Last Name of Jesus

Friends, in the pages of Scripture, no one had surnames. God never introduced Moses, son of Amram, with a last name. You won’t find Daniel the prophet signing letters “Daniel Ben-Babylon.” In those days, people were known by their lineage, their calling, or their hometown.

By lineage:

  • James the son of Alphaeus (Mark 3:18)
  • Simon son of Jonas (John 1:42)
  • Saul the son of Kish (1 Samuel 9:1–2)

So was Jesus.

  • The Son of Joseph (John 1:45)
  • The Son of Mary (Mark 6:3)
  • The Son of Man (Matthew 8:20)
  • The Son of God (Luke 1:35)
  • The Son of David (Matthew 1:1)

Each title unveils part of His mission – earthly humility and heavenly authority intertwined.

2. Identified by Calling, Not Clan

People were often known by what they did.

  • Joseph the carpenter (Matthew 13:55)
  • Alexander the coppersmith (2 Timothy 4:14)
  • Matthew the publican (Matthew 10:3)

So when people said Jesus the Christ, they weren’t naming His family – they were acknowledging His calling. Christ means Anointed One. It’s not who His parents were – it’s what His purpose was.

He was the man anointed to bring heaven to earth, to heal the broken, and to restore fallen humanity to God.

3. Known by His Place – Yet Greater Than It

Jesus was also called Jesus of Nazareth. (John 19:19; Acts 10:38) The carpenter from the small hill town became the Savior of the world. The world attached Nazareth to His name; heaven attached the title Christ.

4. The True Meaning of His Name

The name Jesus comes from Yeshua, meaning “The Lord saves.”
The title Christ comes from Christos, meaning “Anointed One.”

So when you say Jesus Christ, you’re saying “The Lord saves by His Anointed One.”

He is not “Mr. Christ.” His parents weren’t “Mr. and Mrs. Christ.” He is the Anointed Savior – the one heaven sent to rescue us from sin.

5. Jesus the Anointed

Acts 10:38 declares, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power.”
From the river of Jordan to the cross at Calvary, the Spirit marked His every step.

He stood in the synagogue of Nazareth and read Isaiah’s prophecy, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me…” (Luke 4:18).

That day, prophecy became reality. He didn’t just carry the anointing – He embodied it.

Hebrews 1:9 says, “God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”
Every miracle, every word, every act of mercy was proof – He is the Anointed of the Lord.

6. Jesus the Anointer

But that’s not where it ends. The Anointed One became the Anointer.
Before His ascension, He promised, “I send the promise of my Father upon you…” (Luke 24:49)

In Acts 1:8, He confirmed, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.”
Then in Acts 2:33, the promise was fulfilled – Jesus poured out the Holy Ghost upon His followers.

They saw it. They heard it. They experienced the living power of God.
That’s why John said, “The anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you.” (1 John 2:27)

Praise the Lord – the same anointing that rested on Christ now rests on His people.

7. The Gospel in His Name

The Gospel itself is written in His name.

  • Jesus means Savior.
  • Christ means Anointed.
  • The Gospel means Good News.

So the Gospel of Jesus Christ is simply the Good News of the Anointed Savior.

That’s what Peter preached in Acts 2:38 – “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ… and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

Do you see it? The name carries the message, the message carries the anointing, and the anointing carries the power of God to save.

8. Christians – The Anointed Ones

Acts 11:26 tells us, “The disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.”
The name wasn’t given lightly. It means “little anointed ones.”

To be a Christian isn’t to belong to a club – it’s to carry the same Spirit that was upon Christ Himself.
Romans 8:9 warns us, “If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

Friends, the true evidence of belonging to Christ is not a church membership, but the presence of His Spirit within you.

He anoints His people to walk as He walked – to heal, to preach, to love, to forgive, and to stand in His authority.
