1 John 4:7 Breakdown: Love Is From God

You hear a lot about love.

People talk about it like it’s just a feeling. Something that comes and goes.

But then you hit moments where you don’t feel it at all. You feel irritated. Distant. Maybe even cold.

So what is love really? And where is it supposed to come from?

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.”
— 1 John 4:7 (KJV)

“Beloved, let us love one another”

This is an invitation, but it’s also a call.

Not just think about love. Not just agree with it.

Actually love one another.

This is active.

It shows up in how you treat people, not just how you feel about them.

Because if love stays as an idea, it never becomes real.

Do you see that?

“For love is of God”

This is the foundation.

Love doesn’t start with you.

It comes from God.

That changes everything.

Because if you’re trying to produce real love from your own strength, you’ll run out.

You’ve probably felt that before.

Trying to be patient. Trying to be kind. And then something pushes you over the edge.

That’s because the source matters.

“Every one that loveth is born of God”

This doesn’t mean anyone who shows kindness once is born of God.

It’s talking about a pattern. A way of living.

A life marked by love.

Because when you’re born of God, something changes inside.

Love becomes part of who you are becoming.

Not perfectly. But genuinely.

That’s a strong statement.

Because it connects love directly to new life in Him.

“And knoweth God”

This goes even deeper.

To know God isn’t just information.

It’s relationship.

And this verse says love is evidence of that relationship.

So if someone claims to know God but consistently lives without love…

Something doesn’t line up.

That’s confronting, isn’t it?

What’s happening in this letter

John is writing to believers, helping them see what real faith looks like.

There were people claiming to know God, but their lives didn’t reflect it.

So John brings it back to something clear.

Love.

Not as a vague idea.

But as proof of a real connection with God.

This verse sits right in the middle of that.

Scripture confirms this truth

Look at John 13:34–35:
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another…”

And 1 John 4:19:
“We love him, because he first loved us.”

That’s the order.

God’s love comes first.
Your love flows from that.

Let’s be honest about what you feel

There are times when love feels hard.

When people test your patience.

When you don’t feel like being kind or understanding.

And you might start to wonder…

If love is from God, why do I struggle with it so much?

Is that where you are?
Do you feel like you’re trying but not always getting it right?

That tension is real.

What this is actually calling you to

This verse isn’t telling you to try harder on your own.

It’s pointing you back to the source.

If love is from God, then you stay connected to Him.

You let His love shape how you respond.

So when you’re faced with a moment where love doesn’t come naturally…

You pause.

You remember where it comes from.

And you choose to act from that place instead of your feelings.

That’s where it becomes real.

So in that next moment when you feel yourself pulling back…

What would it look like for you to respond from God’s love instead of your own limits?

Bringing it together

Love isn’t something you manufacture.

It’s something that flows from God.

And when you know Him, that love shows up in your life.

Not perfectly. But consistently.

So here’s the question that stays with you…

Are you trying to create love on your own… or are you letting it flow from the One it actually comes from?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
