Matthew 9:20–22 Explained: What If Faith Reaches Before You Feel Ready?

You don’t always feel confident.

Sometimes you hesitate.

You think, “What if this doesn’t work?”

So you hold back.

You wait for the right moment. The right feeling.

But what if faith doesn’t wait like that?

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

“And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.”
Matthew 9:20–22 (KJV)

“Twelve Years”

Start with that.

This wasn’t recent.

Not a short struggle.

Twelve years.

That’s long enough to lose hope.

Long enough to try everything else first.

And still… nothing changed.

So when she comes to Jesus, she’s not coming fresh.

She’s coming after years of disappointment.

Do you feel that weight?

“She Said Within Herself”

No one told her what to do.

No recorded conversation.

No one coaching her.

She made a decision internally.

“If I may but touch…”

That’s where it started.

Inside.

Before anything visible happened.

Do you see that?

Faith formed before the action.

“She Came Behind Him”

She didn’t come boldly in front.

She came quietly.

From behind.

Trying not to be noticed.

That’s not what people expect faith to look like, is it?

We think of bold declarations.

But here, it’s quiet.

Personal.

Almost hidden.

Yet it still moved her.

“Touched The Hem”

It seems small.

Just a touch.

Not a conversation.

Not even direct contact with Him.

But to her, it was enough.

Because she believed it was enough.

That’s the difference.

The power wasn’t in the garment.

It was in what she believed about Him.

Do you see that?

“Thy Faith Hath Made Thee Whole”

Jesus turns.

He calls it out.

Not the touch.

Her faith.

That’s what He points to.

And she was made whole.

Not gradually.

Not partially.

Whole.

That’s more than physical.

That’s complete restoration.

What Was Going On Here?

This happens in the middle of another situation.

Jesus is on His way to heal someone else.

And this moment interrupts that.

But He doesn’t ignore it.

He stops.

That context matters.

Because it shows He isn’t limited.

One need doesn’t cancel another.

He responds to both.

Scripture Shows This Pattern

Mark 5:28 adds detail:
“For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.”

It confirms her internal decision.

Hebrews 11:6 says,
“He that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

She came believing.

Not hoping randomly.

Believing something specific.

The Internal Struggle You Might Recognize

You might be waiting.

Waiting to feel stronger.

Waiting to be more sure.

Waiting for doubt to disappear first.

So you delay.

Because you think faith has to feel solid before you act.

But she didn’t wait for perfect confidence.

She moved with what she had.

Is that what’s been holding you back?

Do you think you need to feel ready before you reach?

What This Is Calling You Toward

This isn’t about perfect faith.

It’s about acting on what you believe.

Even if it’s quiet.

Even if no one else sees it.

Even if it feels small.

She didn’t have a long speech.

She had one thought.

And she moved on it.

James 2:17 says,
“Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”

Her faith moved her.

So what would it look like for you to act on what you already believe… instead of waiting for more?

One Truth To Sit With

She didn’t wait to be noticed.

She didn’t wait to feel perfect.

She reached.

And Jesus met her there.

So here’s the question that stays with you…

Are you waiting to feel ready, or are you ready to reach with the faith you already have?

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
