Matthew 8:1–4 Explained: “If You Will”… Do You Really Believe He Wants To?

You know Jesus can heal.

That part isn’t the struggle.

The real question is quieter.

Does He actually want to?

Because when it comes to you, it feels uncertain.

Like maybe He’s able… but not willing.

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

“When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.”
Matthew 8:1–4 (KJV)

“If Thou Wilt”

That’s the man’s question.

Not “Can you?”

But “Will you?”

He already believed Jesus had the power.

He wasn’t unsure about ability.

He was unsure about willingness.

Do you hear that?

That’s where most people actually sit.

“Jesus Put Forth His Hand”

Before anything else… Jesus touched him.

That matters more than it seems.

Lepers were avoided.

Isolated. Untouchable.

But Jesus didn’t step back.

He stepped in.

That’s not what you expect, is it?

Because fear usually creates distance.

Jesus closed it.

“I Will; Be Thou Clean”

That answers the question clearly.

No hesitation.

No delay.

“I will.”

Not “maybe.”

Not “later.”

Not “if conditions change.”

And then immediately… he was cleansed.

Do you see how direct that is?

The question of willingness was settled in a moment.

What Was Going On Here?

This happens right after Jesus finishes teaching.

The crowds are following Him.

And then this man breaks through.

He shouldn’t have been there.

By law, he was unclean.

But he came anyway.

That context matters.

He didn’t wait until he felt acceptable.

He came in his condition.

And Jesus didn’t reject him.

Scripture Confirms This About Jesus

Psalm 103:3 says,
“Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;”

Healing isn’t separate from who God is.

It’s part of His nature.

And in Mark 1:41, the same moment is described this way:
“Jesus, moved with compassion… saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.”

Not pressure.

Not reluctance.

Compassion.

So what’s driving His response?

Not your worth.

His heart.

The Internal Struggle You Don’t Always Say Out Loud

You might not say it directly.

But it shows up in how you pray.

You ask carefully.

You lower expectations.

You prepare yourself for disappointment.

Because if you expect too much, it might hurt more.

So you believe He can.

But you hold back on believing He will.

Is that what’s been happening for you?

Do you feel that hesitation when you bring it to Him?

What This Is Actually Calling You To Do

This man didn’t clean himself first.

He didn’t fix anything before coming.

He came as he was.

And he asked.

That’s it.

Hebrews 4:16 says,
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace…”

Boldly doesn’t mean loud.

It means you don’t hold back.

You don’t filter your need.

So what would it look like for you to come like that?

Not perfect.

Not cleaned up.

Just honest.

One Thing To Hold Onto

Jesus didn’t correct the man’s condition first.

He answered his question.

“I will.”

That hasn’t changed.

So when you come to Him…

Are you still asking if He’s willing, or are you starting to believe what He already said?
