Luke 6:46 Explained: Why Call Me Lord… But Not Do What I Say?

You call Him Lord.

You believe in Him.

You’d say you trust Him.

But then there are moments where you already know what He said…
and you still hesitate.

You delay.
You justify.
You go another direction.

And if you’re honest, that creates tension inside.

Because you’re not trying to reject Him.

But your actions don’t always line up with what you’re saying.

So what do you do with that?

Why does this gap exist… even when your intentions feel real?

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”
Luke 6:46 (KJV)

Sit with that for a second.

It’s a question.

And it’s direct.

“And why call ye me…”

Jesus starts with a question.

Not a statement.

He’s not just correcting behavior.

He’s exposing something.

Because this isn’t about what people say publicly.

It’s about what’s actually happening underneath.

So why do you call Him Lord?

Is it habit?
Is it belief?
Is it identity?

Or is it something deeper than that?

“Lord, Lord…”

That repetition matters.

It shows sincerity.

Emotion.

This isn’t someone casually using His name.

This is someone who means it.

Which is what makes this uncomfortable.

Because Jesus isn’t talking to people who don’t care.

He’s talking to people who say they do.

So it’s possible to sound right… and still be off.

Do you see that?

This connects with something He says elsewhere:

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven…”
Matthew 7:21 (KJV)

So saying the right words isn’t the full picture.

“and do not…”

That’s the turning point.

Not confusion.
Not lack of knowledge.

You know what He said.

But you don’t do it.

That’s the gap.

And that gap is what Jesus is addressing.

So where does that show up for you?

Is there something you already know… but keep putting off?

“the things which I say?”

Now it gets specific.

Not general goodness.

Not vague spirituality.

What He said.

His words.

His direction.

This isn’t about living however feels right.

It’s about responding to what He actually said.

Because if He is Lord… His words carry weight.

So what happens when His words conflict with what you want?

Which one wins?

Now look at the context.

This verse comes at the end of a teaching.

Right after this, Jesus gives the example of two builders.

One hears His words and does them.

The other hears… and doesn’t.

Both heard.

Only one acted.

“And the rain descended, and the floods came… and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”
Luke 6:48 (KJV)

The difference wasn’t knowledge.

It was response.

So this question in verse 46 is leading somewhere.

It’s setting up a contrast.

A life that stands… and a life that collapses.

You see this pattern all through Scripture.

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
John 14:15 (KJV)

Love shows up in response.

Not just words.

And here:

“Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…”
James 1:22 (KJV)

Same idea.

Hearing isn’t enough.

And you see it lived out.

Think about someone like Saul.

He was told clearly what to do.

But he adjusted it.

Kept part. Ignored part.

Then said he obeyed.

That’s the danger.

Calling God Lord… while redefining what obedience looks like.

So is there any area where you’ve been adjusting what God said… to make it easier to live with?

So what is this really exposing inside you?

It’s that gap between what you say… and what you do.

Not because you don’t believe.

But because something else is pulling stronger in the moment.

Fear.
Control.
Comfort.
Delay.

You know what He said.

That’s not the issue.

The issue is what happens next.

And if you’re honest…

Have there been moments where you’ve called Him Lord… but still chosen your own way?

This isn’t Jesus rejecting you.

It’s Him confronting the gap.

Because calling Him Lord means something.

It means His words aren’t optional.

It means they carry authority in your life.

Not perfectly lived out overnight.

But genuinely followed.

So what is He calling you toward?

Not louder words.

Not stronger declarations.

Real alignment.

Where what you say about Him… matches how you respond to Him.

Step by step.

Decision by decision.

This lines up with this:

“Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
Luke 14:33 (KJV)

That’s not about losing everything.

It’s about surrendering authority.

So what would it look like for you to let His words actually lead… in the area you’ve been holding back?

This verse isn’t about catching you out.

It’s about bringing you into something real.

Where “Lord” isn’t just something you say.

It’s something you live under.

So be honest with yourself…

When it matters most… who is actually leading your decisions?
