“These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God.”
Brethren, pause here and consider it. In one breath, Jesus declares certainty, testimony, and first-cause authority. He is not one among many opinions. He is the Amen.
God of Truth in the Old Testament
From the beginning, the Lord revealed Himself as the God of Amen. Isaiah 65:16 names Him so: the One whose word settles matters. Deuteronomy 32:4 thunders, “He is the Rock, his work is perfect… a God of truth and without iniquity.” Do you see it? The Rock does not shift under your feet. The Rock does not deceive your trust.
David knew this when he cried, “O LORD God of truth” (Psalm 31:5). And Balaam was forced to confess, “God is not a man, that he should lie” (Numbers 23:19). Friends, how many of us have been stung by empty promises from men? Yet God has never once dangled false hope.
The Psalms echo it again: “My covenant will I not break… His seed shall endure for ever” (Psalm 89:33–37). The sun in the sky is His faithful witness, and Revelation picks up that witness and crowns it in Christ. From Moses’ encounter (Exodus 34:6–7) to Isaiah’s call to faith (Isaiah 7:9), the story repeats: believe the Amen, and you will be established. Doubt Him, and you will stumble.
Christ Fulfills Truth Personally
Do not miss this. The truth is not a concept. It is a Person. Jesus declares in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” He does not merely teach truth. He embodies it. John tells us He is “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14, 17).
Before Pilate, with death breathing down His neck, He states His mission clearly: “To this end was I born… that I should bear witness unto the truth” (John 18:37). What man would stake his life on a lie? Yet the Son of God sealed truth with His own blood.
The Apostle John will not soften it: “This is the true God, and eternal life” (1 John 5:20). Revelation calls Him “the faithful witness” (Revelation 1:5). And when heaven opens, He rides forth as “Faithful and True” (Revelation 19:11). The Amen begins, the Amen continues, and the Amen finishes.
All God’s Promises Land in Jesus
Friends, listen well: Every promise God ever made finds its Yes in Christ. “All the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Have you grasped that? Not one is left dangling. Not one is a maybe.
Paul reminds us, “God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began” (Titus 1:2). Hebrews assures us, “It is impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18). When storms of doubt rage, when men argue and feelings rebel, cling to this anchor: “Let God be true, but every man a liar” (Romans 3:4).
And when you believe Christ, you set your seal that God is true (John 3:33). Faith is not a leap into darkness. Faith is stamping “Amen” on the witness of God.
Jesus Speaks With Amen Authority
How often did our Lord begin with “Verily, verily”? That is the Amen formula on His lips. “Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law” (Matthew 5:18). “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again…” (John 3:3, 5). Do you hear the weight? These are not suggestions. These are settled decrees.
Even creation will crumble, but He declares, “My words shall not pass away” (Mark 13:31). Brethren, whose words will you trust? The words of men that rot and vanish, or the words of Christ that endure forever?
The Amen and Creation
The Amen is not only at the end of the story. He was there at the beginning. “All things were made by him” (John 1:3). Paul declares, “By him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17). Hebrews adds, He upholds “all things by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3).
And at the close of Revelation, Jesus Himself says, “I am Alpha and Omega” (Revelation 22:13). The first word is His. The last word is His. Is that not enough to quiet every anxious heart?
Our Amen Back to God
Nehemiah 8:6 paints the scene: the people hear the Word and answer, “Amen, Amen.” That is what faith sounds like. Psalm 106:48 calls, “Let all the people say, Amen.” Paul expected that in the assembly the hearer could clearly say “Amen” (1 Corinthians 14:16).
So what must we do? Friends, we are called to live a life of Amen. In prayer, in praise, in obedience. Say Amen when you don’t feel it. Say Amen when you can’t see it. Say Amen because the One you trust is Himself the Amen.
A Final Word to the Heart
The Amen is not fragile. He is not shifting sand. He is the Rock. He is faithful when you are tired, when you are waiting, when you are wounded. His promises do not expire. If God said it in Christ, it is not a maybe. It is Yes.
So, brethren, the choice is before us. Will you waver with men who lie, or will you stand with the Amen who never fails? Let your heart rise and say with all God’s people: Amen.
