Bible Study About Joseph Son of Jacob

Bible Study About Joseph

God Meant It For Good

Brethren, hear this with faith. The God who walked with Joseph, son of Jacob, still walks with us today. He speaks in dreams, proves us in delay, guards us in temptation, trains us in prisons, lifts us to purpose, and softens our hearts to forgive.

What men mean for evil, God means for good. What feels like loss, God folds into life. Friends, praise be to God, the Lord watches every step, counts every tear, and turns every chapter toward His promise. Trust Him. Obey Him. Forgive like Him. The story is not over. God is writing.

The Dream That Started Everything

Joseph dreamed as a teenager, and heaven wrote those dreams on his soul. His brothers’ sheaves bowed to his sheaf, then the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed too.

He learned early a holy secret: “Do not interpretations belong to God?” He knew meaning comes from the Lord, not from pride or people. The path looked nothing like the promise, yet God kept the pen. Friends, have you shelved what God once showed you because life got loud? Hold the dream. Hold the Giver.

“Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him.”
(Psalm 105:19, KJV)

When Delay Feels Like Denial

Sold at seventeen, Joseph was dragged to Egypt, thrown into duty, then dumped in prison. The timeline is a sermon. He was thirty when God lifted him to serve a nation. In the second year of famine, his brothers bowed without knowing who he was. The wait from pit to palace was long, yet right on time. Praise the Lord, the clock in heaven never runs late.

“Pharaoh sent and loosed him… made him lord of his house.”
(Psalm 105:20–21)
See also Acts 7:11–13.

Integrity When No One Is Watching

Temptation knocked daily in Potiphar’s house. Joseph answered with worship.

“How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
(Genesis 39:9)

He fled, leaving his garment behind rather than leave his God. He chose purity over pleasure and prison over compromise.

“And she caught him by his garment… and he fled.”
(Genesis 39:12)

Friends, do we call sin what God calls it, even when it costs us? The Lord sees. The Lord rewards.

Faithful In The Dungeon

Bars did not bar God. “The LORD was with Joseph.” He served, noticed sorrowing faces, and ministered with the gift God gave.

“Do not interpretations belong to God?”
(Genesis 40:8)

That humble question became a doorway to destiny. Jesus taught the same pattern in principle.

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.”
(Luke 16:10)

Small faithfulness in dark places prepares us for bright assignments.

Lifted To Lead, Yet Low Before God

Summoned to Pharaoh, Joseph did not market himself. He magnified God.

“It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”
(Genesis 41:16)

He interpreted the twin dreams.

Seven years of plenty, seven years of famine. (Genesis 41:25–32)

Pharaoh saw it too.

“Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?”
(Genesis 41:38)

Then came the ring, the robe, the chariot.

“Only in the throne will I be greater than thou.”
(Genesis 41:40)

Greatness bowed to God and went to work.

“He gathered corn as the sand of the sea.” “He opened all the storehouses.”
(Genesis 41:48–49, 41:56)

Wisdom That Feeds Cities

Leadership is love with a plan. Joseph did not hoard power. He stewarded provision with justice and foresight.

He provided seed that the people might live. (Genesis 47:19–24)

Friends, leadership under God protects the weak, plans for tomorrow, and points every credit back to the Lord.

Family Tears, Family Tests

The governor’s mask could not hide a brother’s heart.

“His bowels did yearn upon his brother… and he sought where to weep.”
(Genesis 43:30)

At his table, Benjamin received five portions.

“Benjamin’s mess was five times so much.”
(Genesis 43:34)

Grace does not count ounces. Grace pours.

Then came the silver cup, the staged crisis, the chance for the brothers to repeat old sins. Judah offered himself in Benjamin’s place. Hearts had changed. Heaven had been working.

See Judah’s plea in Genesis 44:18–34.

“I Am Joseph”

No more disguises. Only tears and truth.

“I am Joseph; doth my father yet live?”
(Genesis 45:3)

Mercy spoke louder than fear.

“Be not grieved… God did send me before you to preserve life.”
(Genesis 45:5)

Praise be to God, this is the language of providence. The wound is real. The hand of God is truer.

Forgiveness Stronger Than Memory

When Jacob died, fear returned to the brothers. Joseph preached the gospel before the gospel.

“Fear not… ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass… to save much people alive.”
(Genesis 50:19–20)

He comforted them, promised provision, and spoke kindly.

(Genesis 50:21)

This is our pattern.

“Forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
(Ephesians 4:32)

Friends, who needs your kindness today?

Two Names That Sing In Hard Places

Joseph named his sons with testimonies.

Manasseh: “God hath made me forget all my toil.”
Ephraim: “God hath made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
(Genesis 41:51–52)

Affliction cannot stop fruitfulness when God plants the tree.

From Type To Triumph

Joseph’s life points past itself to Christ.

Betrayed for silver

Joseph sold by brethren.
Jesus betrayed for thirty pieces of silver. (Matthew 26:15)

Falsely accused

Joseph condemned though innocent.
“Many bare false witness against Him.” (Mark 14:56)

Silent trust

“He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter… he openeth not his mouth.” (Isaiah 53:7)

Exalted to save

Joseph raised to a throne to feed the hungry.
Jesus highly exalted, Name above every name. (Philippians 2:9–10)
He gives the bread of life. (John 6:35)

When Joseph rode and knees bowed, it foreshadowed the day when every knee shall bow to Jesus.

The Long View Of Faith

Trace the years and take courage.

  • Seventeen: Sold into Egypt. (Genesis 37)
  • Thirty: Released and raised. (Psalm 105:20–21)
  • Second year of famine: Brothers bow. (Acts 7:11–13)
  • Reunion: Jacob embraces Joseph. (Genesis 46:29)
  • Seventeen years more with his father in Egypt. (Genesis 47:28)
  • To the end: Joseph saw generations, died at one hundred and ten. (Genesis 50:23, 50:26)
  • Promise kept: His bones carried out by Moses and laid in Shechem. (Exodus 13:19; Joshua 24:32)

Faith is not a sprint. It is a steady walk with a faithful God.

Work Like Joseph, Point Like Joseph

Success did not steal Joseph’s song.

“Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.”
(Colossians 3:23)

In Potiphar’s house, in prison, in Pharaoh’s court, Joseph served as unto God. Friends, the same Spirit strengthens our hands.

Practical Calls To The Heart

Praise the Lord for the dream and the delay. Thank you, Lord for the prison that became a school. Praise be to God for grace that makes us forgive.

  • When tested: Remember, “the word of the LORD tried him.” (Psalm 105:19)
  • When tempted: Say with Joseph, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9)
  • When forgotten: Serve the person in front of you. God sees. (Genesis 39:21; 40:5–8; Luke 16:10)
  • When lifted: Say, “It is not in me: God.” (Genesis 41:16)
  • When wronged: Speak Joseph’s creed, “God meant it unto good.” (Genesis 50:20)

A Moment Of Decision

Friends, are you in the pit, the house, the prison, or the palace? The Lord is with you in each one. Will you trust Him with your timeline? Will you run from sin, work with excellence, and forgive from the heart?

Brethren, choose today. Believe God’s dream. Embrace God’s process. Practice God’s mercy. Live for God’s glory.

Let us pray.

Father, in Jesus’ name, we yield our dreams to Your wisdom, our delays to Your timing, our temptations to Your strength, our prisons to Your purpose, our authority to Your fear, and our wounds to Your healing. Make us like Joseph. Make us like Jesus. Amen.

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
