Let’s be real for a second.
Most people don’t wake up and say, “Today I’m going to ignore God.”
It’s not that obvious.
It’s more subtle.
You wake up, check your phone, think about your responsibilities, your money, your deadlines, your problems… and before you know it, your mind is already full.
God isn’t rejected.
He’s just… pushed back.
And that’s why Matthew 6:33 hits so hard.
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
That one verse doesn’t just give advice.
It rearranges priorities.
What Does “Seek First” Actually Mean?
Let’s not overcomplicate this.
To seek first means God is not your backup plan.
He’s your starting point.
Before decisions.
Before reactions.
Before anxiety takes over.
Jesus said this right in the middle of a conversation about worry. Food, clothing, daily needs. The stuff people think about constantly.
And He doesn’t say, “Ignore those things.”
He says, “Put them in the right order.”
Seek the Kingdom first.
Everything else follows.
That’s the shift.
The Kingdom Isn’t a Place… It’s a Rule
When Jesus talks about the Kingdom of God, He’s not just talking about heaven someday.
He’s talking about God’s rule, His authority, His way of doing things, showing up in your life right now.
So seeking the Kingdom means asking a simple but uncomfortable question:
“What does God want in this situation?”
Not what feels right.
Not what’s easiest.
Not what everyone else is doing.
What aligns with Him?
That’s seeking.
And it’s active.
Why Most People Struggle With This
Let’s be honest again.
We don’t struggle because we don’t understand the verse.
We struggle because life feels urgent.
Bills feel urgent.
Deadlines feel urgent.
Problems feel urgent.
So we flip the order.
We handle everything first… and then, if there’s time left, we seek God.
But Jesus is saying the opposite.
Put God first, and watch how everything else lines up.
That sounds simple.
But it requires trust.
Because it feels like you’re letting go of control.
The Promise Most People Miss
There’s a promise attached to Matthew 6:33 that a lot of people quote… but don’t actually believe.
“All these things shall be added unto you.”
What things?
Everything Jesus just mentioned before that.
Provision.
Daily needs.
The things people worry about.
He’s saying if you put God first, you won’t be abandoned in the practical parts of life.
That doesn’t mean everything will look the way you expect.
But it does mean you won’t be left without what you truly need.
That’s a bold promise.
And it only works if the order stays right.
What Seeking First Looks Like in Real Life
Let’s bring this down to everyday life.
Because this isn’t just a “good idea” verse.
It’s meant to be lived.
Start Before the Noise Starts
Before your day fills up, give God your attention.
Not rushed.
Not distracted.
Even if it’s short, make it real.
A few minutes in the Word.
A simple, honest prayer.
That sets the tone.
You’re telling God, “You come first, not what’s waiting for me.”
Filter Your Decisions Through Him
You’ve got choices all day.
Small ones. Big ones.
Instead of reacting automatically, pause and ask:
“Does this align with God’s way?”
That might change how you respond to people.
How you spend money.
What you say yes or no to.
That’s seeking the Kingdom in motion.
Obey the Small Promptings
Sometimes seeking God first isn’t dramatic.
It’s quiet.
A nudge to speak.
A check in your spirit to stay silent.
A conviction to walk away from something.
A pull to pray for someone.
Those moments matter more than people think.
Because they build sensitivity to His leading.
Stop Carrying What You Were Told to Release
Jesus talked about worry right before Matthew 6:33 for a reason.
Because worry is what happens when you try to control what God already promised to handle.
Seeking first means doing your part… and trusting God with what you can’t control.
That’s not laziness.
That’s alignment.
The Order Changes the Outcome
Here’s what most people don’t realize.
It’s not just what you do.
It’s the order you do it in.
You can work hard, plan well, and still feel stressed if God isn’t first.
But when He is first, something shifts.
You still work.
You still plan.
But there’s peace under it.
Clarity.
Direction.
Because you’re not leading anymore.
You’re following.
When It Feels Like It’s Not Working
Let’s talk about the hard part.
What about when you seek God first… and things don’t immediately fall into place?
This is where people get discouraged.
But remember this.
God’s promise is not instant comfort.
It’s faithful provision.
Sometimes “added unto you” happens in ways you don’t recognize right away.
A door closes that would’ve hurt you later.
A delay protects you from something you can’t see yet.
A situation stretches your faith instead of solving your problem instantly.
That’s still God working.
But you have to stay in the right order long enough to see it.
This Changes Everything
When you truly live Matthew 6:33, your whole perspective shifts.
You stop chasing everything at once.
You stop trying to hold your life together on your own.
You stop putting God at the end of your list.
And instead, you build everything on Him first.
That doesn’t remove responsibility.
It realigns it.
Final Thought
You don’t need a complicated strategy to seek God first.
You need a decision.
A daily one.
Sometimes a moment-by-moment one.
“God, You come first.”
Before my plans.
Before my fears.
Before my reactions.
Because Jesus didn’t just give you a command.
He gave you a promise.
Seek first the Kingdom.
And everything you actually need…
will be taken care of.
Not always how you imagined.
But always in a way that proves you were never on your own.
