You can say all the right things and still be completely off underneath.
That’s the uncomfortable truth most of us try to avoid.
It’s easy to look like something on the outside. It’s easy to talk like you belong to God. But Jesus kept bringing the focus back to one thing that can’t be faked for long. Fruit.
Not words. Not appearances. Fruit.
So the real question is not what you say you are rooted in. The real question is what is growing out of your life.
Because sooner or later, the fruit always tells the truth about the root.
What Jesus Actually Meant by Fruit
When Jesus talked about fruit, He wasn’t talking about random good moments. He was talking about what your life consistently produces.
In Matthew 7:16, He said, “Ye shall know them by their fruits.”
That’s direct. No confusion there.
Fruit is evidence. It’s not a claim. It’s not a label. It’s what shows up over time.
Think about it. A tree doesn’t try to produce fruit. It produces because of what it is connected to and what is inside it.
So when your life consistently produces things like love, patience, truth, obedience, and self-control, that is not random. That is revealing the source.
And on the flip side, when there is constant bitterness, pride, dishonesty, and compromise, that is also revealing something deeper.
The fruit is never the starting point. It’s the result.
The Root Is Where the Real Story Begins
This is where most people get it wrong.
They try to fix the fruit without dealing with the root.
They try to act more loving. Try to be more patient. Try to stop certain behaviors. And for a while, it might look like progress.
But if the root hasn’t changed, the fruit will eventually expose it again.
Jesus made this clear in Luke 6:43-44. A good tree doesn’t bring forth corrupt fruit. A corrupt tree doesn’t bring forth good fruit.
Why?
Because the root determines the result.
The root is what you truly believe. It’s what you are feeding on. It’s what you are connected to when nobody sees.
If the root is the Word of God, if the root is a real relationship with the Lord, then over time, fruit will grow that matches that connection.
But if the root is still the old nature, still driven by self, still untouched by truth, then no amount of outward effort will hold for long.
You Can’t Fake Fruit Forever
This is where it gets real.
You can fake fruit for a moment. You can say the right things in the right setting. You can adjust your behavior when people are watching.
But pressure exposes everything.
When life squeezes you, what comes out is what’s actually inside.
Jesus said in Luke 6:45 that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.
So when frustration hits, when pressure builds, when things don’t go your way, what comes out is not random. That is fruit.
And that fruit is pointing straight back to the root.
That’s why this matters so much. Because fruit is not about performance. It’s about proof.
It shows what’s really going on beneath the surface.
The Connection to Christ Changes Everything
Here’s the hope in all of this.
You don’t have to manufacture fruit. You have to stay connected.
In John 15:5, Jesus said, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit.”
Notice that. He didn’t say try harder. He said abide.
That means remain. Stay connected. Stay close.
Fruit is the natural outcome of that connection.
When you are rooted in Christ, when His Word is shaping your thinking, when His Spirit is working inside you, something starts to change.
Not overnight perfection. But real transformation.
You begin to respond differently. You begin to think differently. You begin to desire different things.
That’s fruit growing.
And it proves the root has changed.
The Fruit of the Spirit Is the Evidence
Galatians 5:22-23 lays it out clearly. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.
That’s not a checklist you force yourself through. That’s what grows when the Spirit is at work in you.
So if someone says they are led by the Spirit, but their life consistently shows the opposite, something doesn’t line up.
Because the Spirit produces fruit.
Not sometimes. Not when it’s convenient. Over time, consistently, visibly.
Again, not perfection. But direction.
Growth you can actually see.
Don’t Ignore What the Fruit Is Telling You
Here’s where you have to be honest with yourself.
What is your life producing right now?
Not what you intend. Not what you hope. What is actually coming out in your attitudes, your reactions, your choices?
It’s easy to explain things away. It’s easy to blame circumstances or other people.
But fruit doesn’t lie.
If the fruit is off, it’s not a surface issue. It’s a root issue.
And that’s not something to feel condemned about. It’s something to bring before the Lord.
Because He doesn’t just expose the root. He restores it.
Let God Deal With the Root
This is where real change begins.
Not by trying to look better. But by letting God go deeper.
Let His Word correct what you believe. Let His Spirit deal with what’s hidden. Let Him pull out what doesn’t belong and plant something new.
That’s what repentance really is. A turning at the root level.
And when the root changes, the fruit will follow.
You won’t have to force it. You won’t have to pretend.
It will grow.
The Proof Is in What Grows
At the end of the day, fruit is not about impressing people. It’s about revealing truth.
It answers the question most people avoid.
What am I really rooted in?
Because whatever that answer is, your life is already proving it.
So don’t just focus on the surface. Go deeper.
Stay connected to Christ. Stay grounded in His Word. Let Him work at the root.
And watch what begins to grow.
Because the fruit will always prove the root.
