Tongues and Unity in the Body of Christ

Tongues and Unity in the Body of Christ

It sounds almost contradictory at first.

Something that is meant to come from the Spirit… ends up dividing people.

Different opinions. Different experiences. Strong reactions on both sides.

And you sit there thinking, “How can something from God create this much tension?”

That question matters.

Because if the Spirit is the source, then the outcome should not be confusion and division.

So something else must be happening.

The Spirit Does Not Divide the Body

Start with something clear.

The Holy Spirit does not work against Himself.

He is not building unity in one place and breaking it in another.

Scripture says we are all baptized into one body by one Spirit.

That means the same Spirit is working in every true believer.

So if division shows up, it is not because the Spirit is creating it.

It is because of how people are responding to what He is doing.

Different Functions, Same Source

The body of Christ is not meant to look identical in every part.

Different roles.

Different functions.

Different expressions.

But the same source.

Scripture talks about many members, yet one body.

That means variation is expected.

But division is not.

Tongues, like any spiritual expression, fits into that bigger picture.

It is not meant to isolate people.

It is meant to be part of the life of the body.

When Focus Becomes Imbalance

Here is where things can shift.

If someone dismisses tongues completely, they can reject something Scripture shows.

If someone elevates it above everything else, they can lose balance.

Both create tension.

Because the focus moves away from Christ and onto positions.

And once that happens, unity starts to weaken.

Not because the truth changed.

But because the focus did.

The Purpose of the Spirit in the Body

The Spirit was not given to highlight one person over another.

Or one experience over another.

He was given to build the body.

To strengthen believers.

To guide into truth.

To produce fruit that reflects Christ.

So anything that pulls people into pride, comparison, or separation is already moving away from the Spirit’s purpose.

Even if it started from something genuine.

Personal Expression vs Corporate Unity

Tongues can be personal.

A way to pray, to build yourself up, to connect with God.

But the body of Christ is corporate.

It involves relationships.

Interaction.

Consideration for others.

So there has to be balance.

What is personal should not be forced on others.

What is corporate should be handled in a way that builds, not confuses.

That is where wisdom comes in.

The Role of Love

This is where everything comes back into alignment.

Love.

Without it, even the most spiritual expression loses its value.

Scripture makes that clear.

You can speak with tongues and still miss the point if love is not present.

Because love is what keeps unity intact.

It removes pride.

It removes competition.

It removes the need to prove something.

And it keeps the focus where it belongs.

Avoiding Comparison

One of the fastest ways to break unity is comparison.

“Why don’t they have what I have?”

“Why don’t they experience what I experience?”

That thinking creates distance.

But the body was never designed for comparison.

Each person is walking with God.

Each person is growing.

Each person is responding.

The Spirit works in ways that are consistent with Scripture, but personal in how they are experienced.

So comparison has no place.

Making Space Without Forcing

Unity does not mean everyone has the same experience at the same time.

It means there is room for what God is doing without pressure.

Without forcing.

Without dismissing.

That creates an environment where people can grow.

Where truth can be understood.

Where the Spirit can move without resistance or confusion.

Guarding Your Heart

At a personal level, this matters.

You have to guard your heart from pride if you have experienced something.

And you have to guard your heart from resistance if you have not.

Both can pull you out of alignment.

Humility keeps you grounded.

It keeps you open to truth.

And it keeps you connected to others.

The Bigger Picture

Tongues are part of something bigger.

The life of the Spirit in the body of Christ.

They are not the center.

Jesus is.

The Spirit points to Him.

Builds His body.

Strengthens His people.

So anything that shifts the focus away from Him starts to lose its purpose.

Closing Thought

Unity is not created by ignoring truth.

And it is not maintained by forcing agreement.

It is built when people stay anchored in what God has said, while walking in humility and love toward each other.

The Spirit is not dividing the body.

He is building it.

So when it comes to tongues, or any spiritual expression, bring it back to something simple.

Is this drawing me closer to Christ?

Is this building unity with others?

Because when the Spirit is truly leading, both will be happening at the same time.
