John 14:26 Explained: You Want To Understand… But Why Doesn’t It Always Click?

You read the Bible.

You try to take it in. You want it to make sense. You want it to actually stay with you.

But then later… it’s gone. Or it feels unclear. Or you second guess if you even understood it right.

So when Jesus says the Spirit will teach you, you start wondering…
why doesn’t it always feel like that?

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
John 14:26 (KJV)

“The Comforter… the Holy Ghost”

Start with who this is.

Jesus calls Him the Comforter.

Not just a teacher. Not just a guide. Someone who comes alongside you.

And He makes it clear. This is the Holy Ghost, sent by the Father in His name.

So this isn’t separate from Jesus’ work.

It’s a continuation of it.

You’re not left alone to figure things out.

Do you see that?

“He shall teach you all things”

This is where expectations can get off.

“All things” doesn’t mean you instantly understand everything.
It means the Spirit teaches you what you need to know, as you walk with Him.

Teaching is a process.

It takes time. Repetition. Correction.

Sometimes you read something and it doesn’t land right away.
Then later, it clicks.

That’s not random.

That’s teaching.

Have you noticed that happening?

“Bring all things to your remembrance”

This part is easy to overlook.

The Spirit doesn’t just give new insight.

He reminds you of what Jesus already said.

That means if nothing is going in… there’s nothing to bring back up.

Simple, but important.

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart…”
Psalm 119:11 (KJV)

What’s stored matters.

Because the Spirit works with what is there.

Do you see the connection?

“Whatsoever I have said unto you”

This keeps everything grounded.

The Spirit doesn’t lead you away from Jesus’ words.

He brings you back to them.

That means true guidance won’t contradict what Jesus taught.

So if something feels like “new direction” but pulls you away from Scripture… that’s not Him.

That’s where a lot of people get off track.

What’s happening around this verse

Jesus is preparing His disciples.

He’s about to leave physically. They’re going to face confusion, pressure, and uncertainty.

So He tells them this.

You’re not losing guidance.
You’re gaining it in a different way.

The Spirit will teach. The Spirit will remind.

That context matters.

This isn’t about casual learning. It’s about being sustained when things get hard.

Other places this connects

You see this again here:

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…”
John 16:13 (KJV)

Teaching and guiding go together.

And then:

“The anointing… teacheth you of all things, and is truth…”
1 John 2:27 (KJV)

The same pattern.

The Spirit teaches truth. Not opinion. Not confusion.

What’s really going on inside

Be honest.

Sometimes you rush through Scripture.

You read it… but you don’t sit with it. You don’t give it space.

Then later, you wonder why nothing sticks.

Or you rely only on what you already understand, instead of staying open to being taught.

Do you feel that?

You want clarity.
But you don’t always slow down enough to receive it.

Is that where the gap is?

What this looks like in your life

This verse isn’t calling you to chase a feeling of being taught.

It’s calling you to stay in a position where the Spirit can teach you.

That means opening the Word consistently.
That means revisiting things instead of rushing past them.
That means paying attention when something comes back to mind later.

Not forcing it. Just staying available.

So here’s the question that matters.

When truth comes back to you in a moment… will you recognize it and respond, or ignore it and move on?

Bringing it together

The Comforter is present.

He teaches.
He reminds.
He brings Jesus’ words back to you at the right time.

Not all at once. But faithfully.

So here’s what lingers.

Are you expecting instant understanding… or willing to stay in the process of being taught?

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
