Philippians 3:20 Explained: Citizenship In Heaven

You’re living here. Dealing with real stuff. Work, pressure, responsibilities, things that don’t go how you expected.

And if you’re honest, it’s easy to get pulled fully into it. Like this world is all there is, all that matters.

So when you read about “citizenship in heaven,” it can feel distant. Almost disconnected from daily life.

Is this supposed to change how you live right now… or is it just about where you go later?

Let’s see what the Scripture actually says.

“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:”
Philippians 3:20 (KJV)

Breaking It Down

“For our conversation is in heaven…”

That word “conversation” here doesn’t mean talking. It means citizenship. Your way of life. Your belonging.

So this is about identity.

You may be physically here, but your true belonging is somewhere else.

Do you see the shift?

This means your values, your perspective, your priorities… they’re not meant to be shaped only by what’s around you.

“…is in heaven…”

That’s your origin point now.

Not something you’re trying to earn. Something you’ve been given.

Heaven isn’t just your destination. It’s your reference point.

That’s not how most people think about it, is it?

“…from whence also we look for the Saviour…”

Now Paul connects identity to expectation.

If your citizenship is in heaven, then your focus turns toward the One who comes from there.

You’re not just existing here. You’re looking for Him.

“…the Lord Jesus Christ:”

Not just a figure. Your Lord. The one you belong to.

So this verse ties everything together. Where you belong shapes what you look for.

And what you look for shapes how you live.

What’s Actually Happening Here

Paul is writing to believers in Philippi, a Roman colony where citizenship was a big deal.

Roman citizens had privileges, identity, and protection tied to Rome, even if they lived somewhere else.

So when Paul says your citizenship is in heaven, they understand the weight of that.

He’s saying, you belong to a different kingdom now.

Just before this, he talks about people whose minds are set on earthly things.

So this verse is a contrast.

Two ways of living. One focused entirely on what’s here. The other shaped by where you truly belong.

That context matters.

Scripture That Helps You See It Clearer

In Hebrews 13:14,
“For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.”

This world isn’t your permanent place.

Then Colossians 3:1–2 says,
“…seek those things which are above… Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Same direction. Lift your focus.

And Ephesians 2:19 says you are
“…fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.”

You’re not outside. You belong.

There’s a clear thread here. Your identity has shifted.

What’s Going On Inside You

But here’s the pull.

It’s easy to get fully grounded in what’s visible. Success, failure, comfort, pressure. You start measuring everything by what’s happening here.

And slowly, your sense of belonging drifts.

You start living like this world is your home, instead of where you’re passing through.

Do you feel that tension?

Have you found yourself more attached to what’s temporary than to what’s eternal?

That’s where this verse presses in.

What This Is Calling You Into

This is a call to realign your identity.

Not by escaping your responsibilities. But by remembering where you belong.

You still live here. You still work, build, deal with real things. But your mindset shifts.

You don’t take your cues only from what’s around you. You take them from heaven.

That affects your decisions. Your reactions. What you chase and what you let go of.

And it keeps your focus on Jesus, not just your circumstances.

What would it look like for you to approach your day today as someone who belongs to a different kingdom?

Closing Thought

You’re here, but this isn’t where your identity comes from.

You belong to something higher. Something unshakable. Something eternal.

And because of that, your focus changes. Your expectations change.

You’re not just moving through life. You’re looking for the One you belong to.

So here’s the question that stays with you:

Are you living like this world is your home… or like you belong to a kingdom that’s still to be fully revealed?

Call to Action: The Question That Demands an Answer

In Acts 2:37 Peter and the Apostles were asked the question – What Shall We do?

And in Acts 2:38 Peter answered, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Do you understand this? After hearing the gospel and believing, they asked what should would do. The answer hasn’t changed friend, Peter clearly gave the answer. The question for you today is, Have you receieved the Holy Spirit Since you believed?
