It is very comforting to know that God will never leave or forsake us. In the context of the scripture found in Hebrews 13:5 it encourages us to stop wasting our time in the greedy pursuit of money and material goods and to be content with such things that we have. The reason we can have this contentment is because God has given us the above assurance of sticking by us at all times.

As always let’s break the words down in these verses and see other meanings the concordance gives us for each one.

Let you conversation: manner of life, way, fashion, character.

Covetousness: love of money, greedy

Content: to be possessed of unfailing strength, to be strong, to be enough, suffice, to be satisfied

Leave: to send back, loosen, give up, to let sink

Forsake: abandon, desert, leave in straits, leave helpless, totally abandon

So first of all our way of life shouldn’t be fashioned by being consumed with the pursuit of always wanting more more and really it is painfully obvious if you give it some thought that if you are always chasing more then you can not possible ever be content or satisfied.

I really love the word content here. Normally the word content conjures up images of being laid back on a banana chair on the beach nice and relaxed while you listen to the waves roll in. However being content is a strength, it is being strong and it is being possessed with an unfailing strength. That has a real wow factor to it – doesn’t it?

When looking at the various meanings for leave it drives home to me even more so just how much God loves us. There are so many scriptures about us being called out, come out and be seperate, God has chosen us, etc, etc. and God will never send us back, let us go or give up on us.

Another meaning for the word to leave is to let sink. Are you one step ahead of me on this one? In Matthew 14 when Peter got of the boat and started to walk on water but then took his eyes of the Lord and onto the problems (wind and waves) and began to sink. What happened? Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. He will not abandon us, he will not allow us to sink.

He also will never forsake us. If you have ever been through any difficulty whatsoever you know how tormenting it can be, indeed the phrase in straits aptly describes the feeling. Jesus will not leave you in that state, he will not leave you helpless and he will never desert you.

In conclusion there is another word from this verse that ties everything together so powerfully. That word is never.

  • He will never abandon us
  • He will never send us Back
  • He will never give up on us
  • He will never loosen his grip on us
  • He will never let us sink
  • He will never desert us
  • He will never leave us in straits
  • He will never leave us helpless

Yes indeed God will never leave us or forsake us.

The headline is a direct quote from the NIV version of the Bible. The King James version in Proverbs 16:3 says, Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. To get a greater appreciation of what is being said here let’s break the scripture down by exploring all of the possible meanings for each word.

Other ways the words have been used in the Bible are…

Works: Deeds, things that need to be done, acts, labour, business, pursuits, undertakings, enterprise, achievements.

Thoughts: Plans, purposes, inventions, imaginations, device.

Established: Prepared, ready, provided, fixed, set up, directed, fashioned, ordered, certain.

The word commit is a strange one meaning: to roll, roll away, roll down, roll together. To me that could mean to amalgamate or merge your undertakings with the Lord – as in roll together or to simple just hand them over to Lord – as in roll away. Either way, if we want to succeed in our undertakings we need to first of all commit them to the Lord.

It is interesting to see the power of thought. It is from our thoughts that things eventually come to pass. Our intentions, our plans and purposes, the things that we might want to invent or create the things we imagine and devise all start in our thoughts. Any reality that comes to pass first must begin within our mind, so it is vitally important we are of a sound mind. The New Testament says that when we receive the Holy Spirit we receive the spirit of a sound mind. (2 Tim 1:7) We are also encouraged in Rom 8:6 to be spiritually minded and that with that sort of thinking we will have life and peace.

So if we want to achieve something, we simply commit it to the Lord and he will establish it. This is an amazing statement when you read what establish means. God will prepare it for us, make it ready, provide it, fix it, set it up, direct us towards achieving the goal, fashion things so it gets done, order it and make it certain.

Wow!

I guess you could sum it all up in the words of Jesus in Matthew 21:22 when he said, And all things, whatsoever ye ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Ever since the dawn of time everyone has been searching for fulfillment and happiness. Sadly almost everyone chases after it in the wrong way thinking that money and riches will give them what they are looking for but that is not the case. True happiness and fullness of life comes from being spiritually minded.

The Bible in Romans 8:6 says For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

It is easy to gloss over some of the statements in the scriptures without taking hold of everything it is saying. In this example above let’s look a little deeper at what the concordance has to say about the what the word life really means.

Here are some of the meanings:

1) Absolute fullness of life

2) A genuine life

3) An active and vigorous life

4) A life devoted to God

5) A blessed life

6) A life that will last forever

Now folks – that’s real life wouldn’t you say?

In a similar manner let’s have a look at the different meanings for peace:

1) Peace and harmony

2) Security

3) Safety

4) Prosperity

5) Salvation

6) Rest

7) Total peace of mind

8) A state where you fear nothing from the Lord and content with your earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is.

Again… isn’t this what everyone is after? The Bible gives the answer for anyone wanting are truly fulfilling life. And of course the answer is to be spiritually minded.

So what does spiritually minded mean?

The NLT version of the Bible probably sums it up best by using the phrase – The Holy Spirit Controls Your Mind. Yes… to be spiritually minded is to allow the Holy Spirit to control your mind.

Of course the only way you can be controlled by the Holy Spirit is to receive the Spirit to begin with. See Acts Chapters 2, 10 and 19. Then if you want to continue to be led by the Spirit you need to pray and read Gods word. Not exactly rocket science is it? That’s why Paul exhorts us in 2 Corinthians 11:3 to remain in the simplicity that is in Christ.

We don’t have waste our life chasing after money and the latest fads to find fulfillment, all we need is to be spiritually minded then we will have true life and peace.

Depression and mental illness is one of the most challenging medical condition anyone will ever have to face. How do you explain to someone who has never experienced depression just how torturous it can be? What is it about our human condition that we can go to bed one night feeling just fine and then wake up the next morning with the onslaught of depression that will affect our life for years to come?

The easiest way I explain it is with this sentence… I have lost my happy.

While suffering depression it doesn’t matter how many good things happen around you or how great your family and friends are you just can’t find happiness. You know there have been plenty of things in your life that have made you happy in the past but when you try to think of them you can’t even think of one. You are in a constant state of unhappiness and to such a degree it can only be compared with mourning the death of a loved one.

Remember for a moment the most terrible thing that has ever happened to you and the pain and sorrow it caused. Now imagine a movie of that event with all of it’s associated pain being replayed in your mind every micro-second of every second of every minute of every hour, 24 hours every day over and over and over again.

It is the worse torture any one has to endure. Your brain speeds up and if left untreated you become so mentally tired from trying to stop the torture and of course you feel so angry about the event or person involved in those mental images being replayed in your mind. Medical treatment should be a priority and the right drugs can slow the brain down again to a level where you can begin to cope again, enough to progress further in treatment.

One of the greatest weapons you can use to fight this stage of depression is to apply one simple concept into your life. Be warned it is a lot easier said then done however if you can master it, you will be well on your way to recovery.

What is it?

Forgiveness… really think about what forgiveness involves and how it can totally free you of those mental images, because if you can forgive the worse thing that has happened to you then those torturous images start to lose there power over you.

Like I said, it is way easier said then done. One of the best ways is to collect every Bible scripture there is about forgiveness and read them, and re-read them over and over again. Go for walks and meditate upon the same scriptures and continually sow into your inner most being as much about forgiveness as you can. Eventually the torture will start to diminish and forgiveness will then take you on a journey where you will find other things like peace, rest, love and the ultimate of all unconditional love.

Having those things in your life will help you find your happy again.
