How Both Conformity and Lack of Conformity
Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
The latter part of this verse where it says: “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” really holds the key to your future happiness. We will discuss this marvellous statement later but for now let’s look at the warning of not being conformed to this world.
Conformed means to: conform or fashion one self (i.e. one’s mind and character) to another’s pattern.
We are instructed not to fashion our mind or our character after the manner of the world. Your mind – therefore your thinking and thoughts should not be conformed to this world. If your thinking and your thoughts are worldly it is only a matter of time before your character follows.
And herein lays the reason why most Christians are unhappy. Let’s face it we all want to fit in, however it doesn’t matter who you are, what you try to do or even if you are a Christian or not you are never going to please everyone anyway. So why compromise your walk in the Lord by trying to fit into the worldly scene when you are never going to fit in anyway?
Really think about this point. No one, Christian or otherwise, really fits in. Have you ever noticed how almost everyone gets talked about behind their backs at some stage or other? From the supposedly really cool guy to the most nerdy one ALL get spoken about in a negative way by someone or some group. No one fits in – it’s an allusion.
Don’t you get irritated by people who try to please everyone and will say anything to do so? Politicians are a good example of this. Through all of their platitudes and compromises and not taking a stand for anything are they liked for it? No they are not. So why do Christians compromise their stand to try to fit into an unfittable place?
Think about the people you like and admire the most, aren’t they the ones who have no pretence about them and even if you don’t agree with them you respect them for it. Trying to be a Christian while at the same time trying to fit into the worldly scene is a guaranteed formula for unhappiness. So why do it?
Honestly take the time to think about the following question.
Who is fashioning your mind and character?
If you are feeling unhappy and unfulfilled then it is time to be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
So why should you not be conformed to this world?
1 John 2:15-16
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
1 John 3:13
Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
1 John 5:19
And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
James 4:4
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Is it any wonder that unhappiness follows those who try to have the “best” of both worlds? They can’t. There is no best in this world.
How can you find happiness in a place that is the enemy of God?
How can you fit into a place that hates you?
How can you find peace in a place that lies completely in wickedness?
Conformity to this world is one of the biggest reasons for confusion and unhappiness in a Christian’s life.
Be Conformed To The Image Of Jesus Christ…
Romans 8:29
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Remember?
Conformed means to: conform or fashion one self (i.e. one’s mind and character) to another’s pattern.
How often do we watch movies and get excited about people fulfilling their destinies and sort of wishing we had a clear and defined path to follow as our destiny?
Hello…
You DO have a destiny.
You have been predestinated (you have a pre – destiny) to be conformed into the image of Jesus Christ.
Christian’s have a destiny to fulfil. We have purpose in our lives. We have a clear and precise path to follow. It is our destiny to have our minds, our thinking, our thoughts and our character fashioned after the pattern of Jesus Christ.
It is our choice who we allow to shape our mind and character.
The world or Jesus?
We ourselves are responsible – no one else.
In Christ we can find true peace and happiness. In Christ we have purpose, direction and a fulfilled life.
So if you want to find true happiness and rest for your soul (inner peace) then be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ and be not conformed to this world.
